I just read an article that said a bill was signed by the House, and going on to the Senate for debate, that will pay for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and… unemployment?
To me this is just weird to tie war efforts with unemployment. Why would you do that? Are you trying to hide something?
The extending of the war, or the “abandoning attempts to set deadlines,” makes me nervous and scared. The democrats have given up and are going to wait to see what the next one is like before they try any of the magic again I looked forward to being able to relax with the troop withdrawals coming up. And now they have enough to spend for yet another year with no end in sight. This also accompanied information that without the signing, the troops would not have gotten paid for a few months and how much greater the debt is now. So it sounds like another lose-lose situation. The deficit is higher or troops do not get paid. SO much for support the troops. They might be funding this by adding a “half-percentage point income tax surcharge” on single people that make over $500,000 or duos that make over $1,000,000. At least us little people wont have to worry too much.
This bill also makes me happy because it will “expand college education benefits for veterans”. Yeah, more college cash so that I can finally abandon the military once and for all and just do my own thing free and clear. Maybe my G I Bill will last me through the nursing program and CJ degree after all. It will also “require Baghdad to match, dollar-for-dollar, U.S. reconstruction aid.” this could be good or bad. Since I think our nation is to giving this will limit the amount we spend. This will also require them to partake in their own rebuilding efforts. The down side is they do not have as many resources as we do according to my brainwashing and so not as much could get down. What does get done will mean more for their freedoms and growth as a society.
The final part of the bill has me the most irked because it offers “a 13-week extension of unemployment payments for people whose benefits have run out.” While understand that the market has crapped out and people need help getting on their feet, my right wing extremist side wants to run around screaming slapping people in the face. Those people who do not have a job by the originally defined period are not trying hard enough. Of all the people I have ever met that used this benefit, all of them waited till the tail end of the benefits to actually look for a job. Then they would get one and be workers again. With the extension, people will have more excuse to milk the system and continue coasting a little longer. The deadline is the motivation. Like I said if there really is not jobs in their area they need to look else were, consider the commute, and consider the less then perfect job. Let them support themselves in a coast job till the one they want opens or a better deal comes by. The fact still remains that they will wait till a more sympathetic is in office and or running the show.
I think I will cut it short here and let you all form your own thoughts on how our president and congress are going to leave this country for the next set of people to deal with.

You know, I just received an email request from Fastweb to take part in a survey about the 2008 election. One of the questions (maybe more, I'm on headache drugs, at the moment, so it's kinda fuzzy) asked what would best help the job market. One of the options was to withdraw from Iraq. Seems to me that putting more into education, small businesses, and slowing outsourcing would do more, but maybe that's just me.
While I can understand the unemployment system and can appreciate it (my mom has had to use it once or twice between jobs while we were growing up), the people that ride it out infuriate me. If we're going to extend the time frame, we'd better be beefing up requirements for actually looking for work, completing training and education programs, etc. The unemployment system isn't going to help those it was designed to help if those too lazy to actually attempt to make a difference in their own lives aren't cut off.
And people are too quick to rely on unemployment. As soon as the job is gone, they're in that line. I'd rather see people beating the trail filling out applications instead of going immediately to that line. Get a days worth of applications in and then hit the unemployment line if you need it to make it through until something pans out... and once you've gotten through that line get back out there with your pen and get back to work. And for the love of god, set limits so people aren't drawing unemployment, finding a job when it runs out and then getting fired as soon as they're eligible again just so they can start drawing again... and I can't count the number of morons I've known who do that.
I'll step off my soap box and let someone else have it before I get off on something else in your post that gets me going non stop.

Both of my parents have been there before. Actually my mom went straight there to fill out an application...she thought she could get the job being fully bilingual (spanish and english) and a fast typer. They said no and offered her a check and some resume classes. A week later she had doubled her wage. My dad on the other hand struggled to get a job because he was over qualified!
I like you soap box, you bring it better then I could

It can be a great system when it actually benefits those who need it and aren't simply out to abuse it. It's just in desperate need of reform. I'm glad your mom was able to double her wages; that's always awesome. Sorry about your dad though. I really hate when people are passed over because they are 'over qualified.' Let them be the judge of that for pete's sake. If they're there, it's because they feel they need to be there... don't pass them over because you think they can do better.
Right after my husband moved out here, he was passed over a few times because he was "over qualified." He was so bummed about it. He'd just moved here, had no job, had never lived out of Tennessee in his life and was desperate to make it on his own. It's frustrating to hear over qualified when you're desperate for anything to make you feel like you're making a real go of it.
Now he has his dream job and I'm thrilled for him. When CompUSA went under at the beginning of the year, he was sorry to see it go. He fricking loved working in the shop there. The new job though is great and he comes home so excited every day. It's always sweet to see that. He just took a second job too because I adamantly refused to let him get a 60 in HDTV (I don't see why in the world anyone needs a TV that big!) when I'm in college, have law school to go and he wants to go back for another degree at some point in the near future. Working weekends at a gas station was his way of keeping our agreement and still getting what he wanted, rofl. I still can't believe the lengths the men I know will go to get all the gadgets and gizmo's they want!

For 1 year i did not work, I was too sick so I did not use it
Tagging legislation together is a form of compromise in Congress...it should be stopped.
