Aww man. So it seems that I have been looking all over the internet for ways to pay for college other than out of pocket and what do we have here...progressiveU. Then come to find out I have been a member for over 40 weeks! Weird. So school is about to begin and I am dreading the loan I have to take out. It's so sad that we are mandated to attend school for 12 years and then to make something better for ourselves we have to pay for the next 8+ years. I know you're saying, well you can get financial aid and academic scholarships...[yada yada yada]...when your parents make too much money there is no financial aid in your name. The sad thing is my mom makes too much money but she is paying off loans with the money she makes! So how is it that she can afford to help me continue on to college when she is still paying off loans 30 years prior. This government is all screwed up. Then if you happen to get a decent scholarship, which most on average dish out about $1,000+ its something but not enough. $1,000 can roughly help you pay for books and a meal plan. No dormitory or tuition fees. [Shaking My Head] Sometimes I feel as if maybe I am the only one carrying this burden on my shoulders. I am actually afraid of student loans and debt. After seeing what it has done to run my single-parent home, I sometimes want to give up. But I know that in doing so I won't solve a thing. So I will do everything to earn the scholarship money offered. Even if it means blogging once or twice every hour! Extreme? I think not. I have a dream so much larger than this American Dream that I am trying to chase and grab hold of not only for myself but for my mother too. I just hope she sees me reach my highest potential before she passes away...because 58 years old seems like a hundred to me! [Smile]

Welcome to the site. Or should I say, welcome back :-)

You can be pretty successful with a bachelor's degree. And a Master's degree is only 2 additional years. So you're looking at 6 years, not 8. And most PhD programs PAY YOU to do your research, so if you go that route, you don't have to worry about tuition and fees and whatnot.

$1,000 can roughly help you pay for books and a meal plan. No dormitory or tuition fees.

Depends where you go to school. My total tuition, fees, and room (no board) costs per semester are about $5000. $1000 is a pretty big chunk of that. Yeah, I have to go out and buy my own food, but with wise spending, that doesn't cost all that much more per semester, and I usually spend about $300 on books per semester, and usually less in the second semester than the first.

At any rate, keep looking for those scholarships, and best of luck with your school fees.

My mom kept all her textbooks, because she shelled out $50-$80 per book, and they were offering next to nothing to sell back. They're useful, though: couch leg broke off - we used textbooks to prop it up. Computer monitor too low? Prop it up with textbooks!

Anyways, I'm getting $3,460 in financial aid (pell grants). The web page said I'd need $9,000 or so per year, but they were counting in dorms, etc., and I'm living at home. I just did the math on what I'll need for tuition and books, and I'm getting enough, but only just - I'll have $86.50 left after books and tuition. And that's only if I buy all new books. I'll buy used books when possible, and that will bring my cost down a bit.

Here's a breakdown of my costs:
$1326 this semester for tuition (my college charges by hours per week you're in class, at $102 per hour, and I'm taking 13 hours this semester)
$361.25 for this semester's books - if I buy them new. Buying them used would cut this cost down to about half.

but are u staying in your home state? I live in nyc...to be living here in the city your entire life...when you get the opportunity to leave and venture out it costs a bundle for out-of-state students to attend the college or university of their choice...i'm stuck staying here this year...but hopefully next year i rack up all the scholarship money i can!

wish me luck =|

Yes, because it's cheaper to live at home and go to a nearby college. I can't afford to go out of state.
