If you're like me, then you love getting mail. You love poring over return addresses and ripping open envelopes. You are dismayed when it's just another credit card offer. You don't want another credit card. You have one and that suits you just fine. You are not going to use it enough to accrue frequent flyer miles and go to Singapore. Et cetera.
So you call the opt-out number and try to remove yourself from their mailing list, but the junk mail doesn't stop! All of the envelopes and form letters end up ripped to pieces in the recycling bin.
Well, at least you're recycling. But what about people who don't recycle? And what about all of the energy and fossil fuels put into producing all that paper. Multiply your situation by thousands, perhaps even millions. Imagine an end to junk mail and how much waste--both physical and energy waste--we would prevent.
How did the Do-Not-Call list to prevent telemarketing come into being? It's certainly not foolproof, but it works pretty well at my house. What if we could institute a Do-Not-Mail list to prevent our personal information from getting to the companies that want to send us various offers? If people would be willing to jump on board, then I'd like to take this somewhere.
