Could someone define “equal” for me, please? It’s not giving them an equal chance unless they would otherwise be discriminated against, and they aren’t being discriminated against in the area of college unless there are some scholarships that are only available to Caucasians or there are some colleges that generally only accept white students, etc. In case you didn’t know, there aren’t any of those in America today. So basically, I could receive more scholarship money if my parents got divorced, I became addicted to alcohol or drugs and started to recover, and I got a girlfriend. Why is that?
Giving money to someone recovering from substance abuse may sound good on the surface, but that doesn’t make it the best thing for our society. I won’t even argue (for now) that we are rewarding people for doing something morally wrong, but what about the consequences? Whether you agree that becoming addicted to alcohol and drugs is morally wrong or not, you certainly can see that both have devastating consequences. By minimizing these consequences, we are encouraging more people to make the same mistakes. (If they don’t have to feel the sting of the consequences, why should they deprive themselves of the pleasure of being high?)

If they are recovering from a serious addiction, then they feel the weight of it on their bodies everyday, and they never forget their drug times. Giving them a second chance to better themselves is not a bad thing no?
Mikesta, I concur.
and I'd like to add that the scholarship is not a reward for drug or alcohol addiction; its specific purpose is to support and aid those trying to overcome addictions. that is a good thing, wouldn't you agree? and if you delve a little deeper, you might find that there's a required essay for some of these scholarships, which might be published to help encourage yet other recovering addicts on their journey. it's like a circle of support.
I kind of agree with this but then again i don't...
I do agree that it seems that you can't just be average person with few problems to get a scholarship. But I dont think it is rewarding people for being drug or alcohol abusers, but helping them start over.
