Angry White Girl Part 2

Katie Marie's picture

Besides the first one, let me explain why I’m ineligible for most scholarships:
*I was born in the best country ever
*I’m white
*I’m middle class
*My parents are still married
*I’m not physically different in the very least (ie: height)
Why is that a problem?? Oh wait, I know why! Since I’m part of the “majority,” my parents obviously have thousands of dollars to pay for me to go to college, right? Since when does being the “regular,” white, middle-class American ensure that my parents have plenty of money? Guess what? My parents get up every day to make sure we have food and roof over our heads just like every single other American. So why are all special interest groups and minorities pandered to by the politicians and, in my case, colleges?
Do you know what really makes my day? Knowing that, if someone offered me a scholarship because I’m a white, middle-class American, they would be racist for the first part and just a horrible person for the second one; but they can offer scholarships to any other ethnic or economic group and it’s perfectly acceptable. As you probably know from my previous blogs, I’m not racist. I long for the colorless society of which Martin Luther King dreamed; but how are scholarships offered explicitly to African Americans, Hispanics, Asians, etc. colorless? Oh wait, I forgot! The goal of these scholarships isn’t to be colorless; it’s to ensure that people of different ethnic backgrounds have “an equal chance.”

Personally, i think that there arent any scholarships for middle class white america is because that makes up like 70% of the population of the united states. Blacks are like 13%, same with hispanics, and asians are like 5%. (not statistically speaking, this is just what i have noticed) generally minorities are more poor than whites. so there are groups to try to help them get the education they deserve even if they dont have the money for it

unfortunately, all there is for middle class whites are merit based scholarships, and if you are the star pupil you seem to be, you should have no problem getting some of those. there are literally millions of scholarships out there. Try fastwebs.com

good luck on your scholarship search!

that is your opinion so you cannot think because you were born in the US that its the best and you deserve money for college. People come HERE for college and you were born here. So what struggle did you go through to get into/apply to a U.S. college? Was it hard figuring out your GPA? Or was it hard deciding whather to take the SAT again? Well think about the fact that people of different backgrounds came to the US and it WASN'T easy, they usually have to learn better English, take ESL tests, etc. You are being a little ignorant here I believe. And I am not even from another country, imagine what people who are think about you.

It's called "White Privilege," edited by Paula S. Rothenberg, and it addresses the very issues you discuss in this blog! It is very interesting, compelling reading.

What on earth are you talking about?

Have you even searched for scholarships?

You're eligible for financial aid regardless of what color your skin is or what country you were born in or if your parents are divorced or not. There are VERY few scholarships that actually do not allow people to apply based on those sorts of things. Do you really think people donating huge amounts of money for people's education are going to give people that money JUST for being black? O.o I've never come across a single scholarship that required me to identify myself as white.

You are making a valid argument as to whether minorities should be able to get certain benefits, solely due to their circumstance. But I do think you're coming across as though you're complaining, without giving credence to any views that may be opposing to yours.

I'm from the Bay Area in California, so there really isn't much racism that I've had to deal with (there was when I was younger, but that was coming from my peers rather than institutions). In other parts of the country, people in the past have enjoyed benefits solely because of their race, and still do so today. But you have to somehow address that Whites and Asians have been statistically excelling at schools whereas Latinos, Native Americans, and African-Americans are experiencing achievement gaps.

i am basically coming from the same situation as you. white middle class. nothing special, parents still together. i cant believe how many scholarships are out there for "minorities". i have yet to find one for somenoe like you or me. it really bothers me that these scholarships exist to "create equality" when really all they do is create even more descrimination. some people have pointed out certain facts about scholarships, but i do not fully agree. i think it is completely ridiculous that i have to skip over so many scholarship opportunities because i am not colored. and of the scholarships that are offered to non white people, none of them say thast they have to be new to the country or must express financial need, at least not from what i have seen. anyways, i completely agree with you and i think its a shame that we are not able to offered as many scholarships because we are white. if i ever find any for white girls, i will let you know. my mom and i were actually just talking about starting a scholarship fund for white girls, even if it only worth $50. i think this should help prove a point! good luck with scholoarships and colleges, and stay proud of your whiteness! lol. and for the record, i am absolutely not racist, i just do not like the fact that some scholarships are.

yes, i know there are a lot of scholarships for minorities, but you are failing to see that there are even more for normal people, i know i shouldn't assume, but, i'm guessing you have good grades. Hello! there are plently of scholarships for that. There are scholarships for everything, i just think you are not looking at all, i recently entered for a scholarship worth $5,000 and all they wanted was an essay on how a person could save money. It had nothing to do with race.
