Typhoon in China

    The BBC reported on typhoon Krosa in China and Taiwan. 140,000 people in China have been relocated Zheijang and Fujian provinces. The Special Olympics and the Chinese Grand Prix are both underway in Shanghai, where all flood prevention workers have been recalled in the event that the typhoon carries on northward. The typhoon has uprooted 200 trees in Taiwan’s capital, but the storm’s 186 mile radius has made sure that all of Taiwan has experienced similar consequences.

    CNN has no story about it on the front page. Neither do the New York Times, LA Times, Yahoo!, or the Washington Post. I know that it is international news, but shouldn’t it be on more than one major news site? News about hurricanes in the U.S. is all over, but as soon as there is another country experiencing weather difficulties, not a sentence on the front pages, except for the BBC. I guess this adds some credibility to the BBC.

    Off the news coverage tangent now. I didn’t realize that the Chinese had a Grand Prix or that the Special Olympics were being held in the same city as the Grand Prix. I’m a little bit confused as to why the flood prevention workers have been recalled because of the rain. That seems like that’s what flood prevention workers would be accustomed to working in.

    Another thing that the article on the BBC (“Powerful typhoon heads for China”) mentioned was another typhoon that hit Vietnam. It has killed 20 people and caused an estimated $40 million dollars of damage. (I would think that this might be more cause for a front page article – two typhoons in one region, but that’s the other tangent.) I suppose we can blame these two typhoons on global warming, whatever global warming is to be blamed on.
