Is anyone else sick of the blatant racism and sexism in this election?? I went to a Bill Clinton rally last week where he came and spoke and shared hillarys message of peace, love, and taxes, and there was actually a mariachi band featured and paid for by the clinton campaign. hmm i wonder why that was? the announcements were given primarily in spanish. during the hour and a half that we all waited to see the tardy former president, we were graced with very racist and sexist cheers and songs. Frequent cheers for "we'll finally put a woman in charge!" and "latinos support Hillary" rang through the rally field. And don't get me wrong, im not mean and racist. I went with one of my best friends, who happens to be hispanic. Its just insane to me how racial this race has become. and its disturbing how much candidates are willing to play off this as much as possible. and it just still blows my mind that a mariachi band was there, hired by the clinton campaign. these candidates are willing to do anything to win, even if they have to go against the most basic of American principles.

I went to a Clinton rally last week as well, and I don't think that racism is really the right term to be using. I am also presuming you are in Texas, because thats where Bill was last week. You have to note that politics is all about targeting the demographics. And in texas, there is a higher Latino population that the Clintons are counting votes from. You cater to the demographic, you get the vote (in most cases). If you attended the rally in Houston, and I am sure he said something like this wherever you were, that he wants to see a day where theres an asian, latino, african american president, so racism is a strong word. Its the way politics work, its catering.
I really like the issues you pointed out about the candidates targeting demographics, as I was going to make a similar comment.
To the author: I really don't think that "Latinos support Hillary" can be construde as racist in any way... and a mariachi band is cultural, it wasn't belittling them. As for sexism, wanting to finally have a female condender is quite the opposite.
i dont think that mariachi bands belittle anyone either. i just fear for the future of this nation when the reasoning behind so many voters is based on factors that are "supposed" to not mean anything in this country. race and gender arent "supposed" to come into play in politics, and yet, at least where i live, they are huge and deciding factors for most folks.
and as a side note , i just have to share a lovely quote out of our local paper after bill clinton came to town. a woman supporting clinton said, "i mean, men have run the country for 200 years, and what have they done?" i think this insane quote proves my point lol
And of course that is true, thats why it happens. wishful thinking i guess, but i just wish that politics did not cater so much to the ignorant. very unamerican and yet very widely accepted in this democracy.
so are there mariachi bands at all clinton rallies? or just when the latino pop. is over a certain percentage of the totatl pop.? im curious
the one at University of Houston had a gospel choir, although a majority of the crowd was either latino or asian. I do have to say though, the mariachi band or the choir were better than Obama's music selection--which was an oversparkled band making 90s hits renditions.
I couldn't agree more about the fact that racism is present in what is supposed to be a society that has "come a long way." It's sad, really ... Here we are in 2008, and there is still a great deal of racism that exists, from jugements and prejudice to hate crimes and segregation, and beyond. It's appauling really. I think that while, as a society, we may have come further than we once were, I think it's an illusion that we've come as far as we think we have. With that being said, I do not feel the presidential goings-on are necessarily a reflection of racism. It may not appear completely in balance, but very few things in life appear completely in balance. That's just human nature. It may just be more apparent in one situation, than another. I believe that is where the ability to be objective falls by the wayside.
