How to Support the Troops without Supporting the War

“War, War never changes…”

Ever been walking down the street and started to question your motives? Your desires? Your life philosophy and outlook? Na, me either…but let’s pretend that we did. Let’s pretend that you were walking down the street and ran into me.

You- “Hey T!”
Me- “Hello there fine sir/madam”
You- “So T I’ve got this problem, you see I support the troops, I love the troops, my cousin is in the Navy and I support him and all the individual troops doing their best to protect the country...”
Me- “But…”
You- “I never thought the war was a good idea and I disagree with it now more than ever, what should I do?”
Me- “Hmmm…let’s ponder…”

War, war never changes…and this one is no different than the rest. Men die, women die, children die. Death is the goal of war. There can be no war without death, so whatever the politicians preach on TV, war is about killing your opponent…not harming, not disarming, but annihilating, destroying, obliterating. And for that simple reason, war will never change.

What are the facts of this war? What led us to war? What were our leaders willing to gain in light of the fact that people will die? Pride, we were attacked-someone must pay. Hence pride is a reason for the war. With pride comes revenge and with revenge comes hate. Hatred is a reason for the war. After 9/11 my middle school mind went into hate everything mode-hate the Muslims, hate the terrorists, hate, hate, hate. Let’s look at the things we know and not the things we feel for a moment though.

The hijackers were mainly from Saudi Arabia, not Iraq or Afghanistan. So let’s attack Saudi Arabia-can’t do that the Saudis our are friends. Bin Laden claimed responsibility…after we said it was Bin Laden…and Bin Laden trains his terrorists in Afghanistan. So let’s attack Afghanistan-sounds like a plan good idea kid. Iraq supports terrorists, Iraq’s leader is bad, Iraq wants to kill us with its WMD’s, fine let’s kill Iraqis too-that’s the best damned idea I ever heard kid.

But Iraq didn’t have weapons of mass-destruction, or at least the strongest and most powerful country in the world got fooled and they hid them from us…like a game of hide and seek, that we loss :). And compared to the rest of the world leaders…Saddam wasn’t anything special. He was oppressive and cruel and his people hated him for the most part…but that could be said about dozens of countries. And according to our own CIA and Congress Saddam had no ties, physically, emotionally, or financially, to al-Qaeda.

So what’s the goal here? What is winning here? Democracy? Stable government of any kind? Less deaths? How can I support a war that has no purpose, no motivation, and no goals? How can I support useless deaths?
What is supporting the war? Telling my friends I support the war? Preaching to large audiences about how great the war is? I don’t need to buy war bonds or ration my food, so what is supporting the war? To lie about one’s beliefs is the easiest lie in the world to tell.

Ok so I don’t understand the war, therefore I can’t support it. But what about the troops? I obviously respect what they are doing, and who they are doing it for, me. But are they the war? What is a troop, what is a soldier?

A soldier is a man. A soldier is a brother, a best friend, a father, a husband. A soldier feels pain and joy. He laughs when he hears a joke, and cries when a brother falls. A soldier is a man. He is flesh and blood and heart and muscle. A soldier is your cousin, he is your father, he is your best friend.

To say I support the soldiers is to say that you support the man. The man who gives his life to save another, who runs towards the fighting and not away. To support the soldiers is to respect the life that they have and the job that they have chosen. A soldier is not the war-he is but a man. And we can all respect the man.

War, War never changes…

You don’t have to support the war to support the man.

Have a nice day

Hilarious monologue first of all. I see what are trying to say and I agree you don't have to support the war to support the troops, someone has to preach this to the democrats in congress. They were given the house majority in 2006 to end the war. They threatened to cut off funding and then backed down when the republicans started accusing democrats of "not supporting the troops". That's a bunch of crap the democrats don't have spines they melt at words and evaporate at action. I figured if they cut off funding wouldn't we have no choice but leave Iraq? Now don't accuse me of being conservative because I'm a liberal it's just that the democrats are just pissing me off right now for doing nothing, I guess it's the lesser of two evils.
In addition I have have an issue with "Death is the goal of war." I believe in my opinion the goal of war is not death but rather to gain something. The means to gain this something is through forcing the opponents hand, this is done through death or other oppressive means.
Just my thoughts but you brought up a good subject. Let the shooting began, I know someone is going to attack my statement.

Congressional democrats equal no balls....for women, no woem equivalent of balls. They stand tough until someone throws a pebble in their way then they run and hide...ballless.

If your strategy is to end the war....end the fucking war. ( I don't necessarily agree with their strategy all the time) But it is not a complicated process. Bush veto's then it is his fault not yours. You write the budget, you decide when we go to war, you pay for the war....start doing your job with some balls congress.

Nothing is True, Everything is Permitted

war is about killing your opponent…annihilating, destroying, obliterating.

Here, here!

Bravo! "You don't support the troops" has become the default response for those who are pro-war against those who are anti-war. It's absolutely ridiculous to tell me that I don't support the troops, when the main reason I am against the war is that I don't want the troops to die in the sand, an ocean away from home.
