Higher Taxes - Are They Really That Bad?

It seems like nobody wants higher taxes. People just want to keep as much of their money as possible because they want to feel secure and of course, be able to spend their money. They want to make sure their families have money. And all of this for what? In order to be happy.

It might surprise some people, but countries in which the citizens pay higher taxes, they are actually more happy. In such countries people may pay between 50 and 70 percent of their income on taxes. As a result the government takes care of things such as healthcare and education.

Not only do these higher taxes allow for the government to take care of these things, but they allow for people to have various jobs and still live comfortably and happily. The best example of this type of community is Denmark. Denmark has some of the highest taxes in the world, but its people are happier than those from other countries. People in Denmark don't see spending their money as such a high priority, but still enjoy the same types of luxuries that the affluent in America enjoy.

So many people are so against taxes being raised and even go so far as to vote for politicians, their sole reason for voting for them being that they will keep taxes down. Are we all missing something here? It seems that in reality tax increases will not lead to what we are all afraid of them leading to.

also keep in mind that when people have to pay higher taxes, the spending rate is lowered and people are more likely to save their money rather than consume them. That's when the economy starts to go down because the market is extremley slow. People start to hold off on buying elastic and inelastic products. GDP goes down and that's when people start panicking if their money will be worth what it should be in the near future. On the other hand, if the taxes are low people spend their money and this stimulate the economy. GDP goes up, people have that feeling of being relatively "richer" even if mathematically they aren't. These fiscal policies initiated by the government always depends on the state of the economy and other world wide evens that affect the market.

That's a really good point. I guess different things may work in different countries. Maybe what's good for Denmark isn't necessarily right for the U.S. especially with what already exists.

Socialist countries in Europe tend to provide their citizens with many, many services. For instance, in many of those countries, a college education is free or almost free. I wouldn't mind paying more taxes in the US if I actually got something for them.

i hear you.

I agree with what you are saying. You have good points, and the Denmark example is good. If people here would get over the fact that they might have to pay a little extra towards taxes, then it could possibly make people happier like in Denmark. :)

Since I know you...

I know that in the way that you're thinking, you're talking about our town. And yes, specifically in our town and other wealthy towns like ours, people are just being selfish when it comes to not wanting to pay taxes. (especially a certain person who says he is running out of money to buy food and such, but apparently has enough money to go gamble *cough *cough). Our town budget has definitely suffered because of selfish people who care about themselves more than our schools or roads etc.

However, you have to be careful on such a broad site like this because we are talking nationally. You don't want to get anyone on here mad at you. :)

Good job being on here at all for a 13 year old though.

My guess is you'll feel differently once you hit your peak earning years and you realize how much better you could spend you own hard earned money on your family then the job the government is doing of wasting it.

But maybe your generation is different. I hope so because I am not all that far from retirement and people my age are going to be putting heavy demands on your generation to keep the Social Security and Medicare systems afloat. Because us elderly have more health problems, we'll also be the heaviest consumers of the new nationalized healthcare system that is probably coming soon. There is a reason why ARPA favors it and it is amazing that today's youth are such suckers to fall for it. I guess there is a reason to have crappy schools. It is coming just in time too. I can't wait to dump my health insurance and turn that responsibility over to you young people. As a group, the elderly are the richest Americans just because we have had more time to accumulate. But we pay the least taxes because while we have a lot of money, our earning are low. Having you all pick up the tab for my healthcare will keep a lot of that wealth in my bank account and I'll be living the good life.

Thanks! It is good of you all to be so understanding!
