I was running errands alone in the car and was listening to good old talk radio when I heard a ‘news’ clip that caught my attention. It was about a new constitutional amendment proposal to prohibit family members from running for president and something about a dynasty. This caught my attention and I knew I had to look into it since I would not drive around for hours to wait for the whole story.
What I found is that “Norquist has commissioned lawyers to draw up a constitutional amendment that would ban family members from succeeding one another to elected and appointed office.” This was started before anybody knew if Sen. Clinton would make it or not, but this amendment would not affect this go around. He wants to do this to warn against the perils of a dynasty saying things like “It will be ridiculous to have Mr. President and Madam President in the White House; We’re the United States of America. How can we say to President Mubarak [of Egypt], ‘You can’t hand off the presidency to your son, it’s got to be your wife’ or, ‘Hey Syria and North Korea, you’ve got to knock this stuff off and be like us’.”
His might be making this from a good place but I think, even as what I am, that this is a wee bit crazy, and the reasoning is completely misplaced. He wants to make policy that may dictate what other countries do? Please, we are not them and a dynasty will not happen. Had this Bush-Clinton- Bush- possibly Clinton been a really good time of growth and perfect ness he would have not cared. Had this been in affect from the beginning there would be at least one president who had done something for this country that could not have been. We do not vote on by relation or have successions so to me this was just a weird idea.
Since this was put up so long ago, I wonder if it is even still being pursued. I even wonder how I really feel about it …
