The Most Unusual Foods

ProgressiveUser's picture

Everyone knows that there are unusual meals around the world. But maybe to you, they aren’t. I am going to try to name some of the ones I’ve heard of:

- mice (source is from a sociology book)
- rats (source is from a sociology book)
- pig feet (super market experience)
- cow tongue (super market experience)
- monkey brain (source is from a sociology book)
- fish sperm (source is from a sociology book)
- snake (television- Discovery Channel)
- frog legs (well I know we eat them in this country but I think its gross)
- snail or in other words S car go (I’ve tried this in Malta when I was 5, it’s a delicacy there- personally I think it tastes horrible)
- spiders (television- Discovery Channel)
- dogs (eaten in Germany, as far as I know, once the Germans had a lack of food so they resulted in eating dogs many generations ago and so it became a part of their culture)
- squid (super market experience)
- octopus (super market experience)
- larva in New Zealand (weird food website)
- once a teacher of mine said that they ate blood after boiling it and letting it sit and form a jelly (also on the weird food website)
- this may be the weirdest, I was watching this television program about coffee and one of the worlds most expensive coffee is made of the waste of an animal that’s similar to a raccoon but I’m not sure exactly what it was.

If anyone has anything to add-feel free!

Have you actually tried any of those foods? You should give some "weird" food a try... it certainly is an experience!!

Squid, eel, and octopus are eaten regularly where I live (Japan), so I've had my fair share.

Another unusual food: natto. It's a fermented soybean... slimy, sticky, smelly, and quite nasty, although many claim it to be healthy and delicious. I can't quite stomach it, though. Have I tried it? Sure, a couple times... I'd rather eat octopus.

Gelfite fish has to be up there... it just sounds nasty, and it doesn't look all that appetizing.

I remember seeing calamari on a menu in an Italian restaurant in the Netherlands, and their English translation (for those of us who don't speak Dutch) was 'ink fish'. That was certainly an interesting experience. But calamari, when not fried with tentacles and all, is actually pretty good. So is alligator, which I had at a cajun restaurant up in Denver.

Lox is weird, but it tastes yummy (if you can deal with the slimy texture).

Oh, and it's escargot, not S car go.

I'm not big on Scandinavian dishes either... my mom had to have lukefisk as a kid, and I refuse to try it. Potato dumplings are gross too, but I wouldn't exactly consider them unusual food.

I have heard of that coffee. They feed coffee beans to the animal and they pass through the digestive system withuot breaking down, and then the beans are picked out of the fecal matter. I think. I haven't read about it in a while.

you want to know about a disgusting-sounding food, google casu marzu. I won't tell you what it is. I want you to experience the fun of finding out on your own. ;-)

I think you are right about how the coffee is made. It sounds pretty nasty... and it is really expensive!!

you know what's kind of sad is the coffee snob in me thinks the coffee might actually be pretty good, and I sort of want to try it.

I'll probably never be able to afford it. It's quite pricey. But I would try it if offered to me. I'm sure they clean the beans thoroughly before roasting them... :-)
