As tomorrow is Earth day which is highly celebrated more and more each year. I would like you to know that this week is also TV turn off week. I know it’s hard to register the thought of turning off the tube. Some of us watch it for news, others during diner or as a way to chill out from work. But still I totally support the idea of doing something other then the tv for once. My only question is does watching your favorite show online count?

I was put onto this by an article on sparkpeople.com which is a great site I’ll have to talk more in depth about later. But here below are some facts I got off the www.tvturnoff.org website. Hope it is eye opening.

How many people are in the average American household? 2.55

How many televisions do they have? 2.73

We are a society of more televisions than people!

50% of American homes have at least 3 televisions or more
19% of homes have only 1.

In 1975 only 11% of US households had more than 3 TVs…and 57% only had 1!

The average American home has the television on for well over 8 hours every day. That is an hour more than just a decade ago.

The average American watches 4 hours and 35 minutes of television each day.

Young people 12-17 years of age increased their television viewing by 3% just this year…a pretty big increase in just 12 months.

40% of Americans always or often watch TV while eating dinner.

By age 65, the average American has seen 2 million TV commercials.

The average American youth spends about 900 hours per year in school, and over 1,000 hours per year watching TV.

Here are the dates so write them down.

April 21-27, 2008
April 20-26, 2009
April 19-25, 2010

I watch about 7 hours of television each week. Actually, less than that, because I record all my shows (2 hours on Monday, three hours on Thursday, one hour on Friday, and one hour on Sunday), and then fast forward through all the commercials, so it amounts to about 5 1/4 hours of TV each week. I'm far below the average.

When I do watch TV outside those 7 hours, it's all educational programing, on the history, discovery, or discovery health channel.

I'm a PBS guy, myself. That and Missoula Community Access Television. How can you be ashamed of that?

I'm convinced that even if a study came out that appropriated an average time frame that each American spends in front of a screen, we would care less. There are so many people who have weekly mind-numbing shows. What a wonderful society.

My partner and I just got selected as a Nielsen family, so we will be keeping a diary of how much TV we watch starting Thursday. It should be eye opening!

My dad is one of those. I think it's hilarious, cause he watches more of the history and weather channel than anything else.
