Bad idea:
I am a black woman!
I do not know about other nationalities or other people...but I hate to be called black or brown. I should not defined by the melanin(sp?) in my skin. I am not a color. I try not to call others races there colors. In my opinion if people could become more politicaly correct there would be less racist sentiment.
Another blogger before mine has a list of names of nicknames so to speak of the races. Just a side note. Back on topic.
I do not go up to people and say look at that red kid or that yellow one. I say Native American and Hispanic. Is it so hard to get away from colors?
The proper names in my opinion.
White= Caucasins
Black or Brown= African American
Yellow or Orange= Hispanics
Yellow with the eyes= Asians
Red= Native American
If you are "white or black" and not American or European you can be your nationality.
Good Idea:
I am Bajun or South African or I am from the Bahamas.
People please let us grow up...It is nice we know our colors now can we learn our nationalities.

To comment on your name for the yellow or orange, not all Latinos are yellow and orange. Some are brown and some may look "African-American" because they have African roots. A lot of Cubans and people from the Dominican Republic have African roots.
Some people find the term Hispanic offensive. I forget the reason behind it. Some geographical or historical reason. Every person I meet of Dominican Republican descent does not like being called Hispanic. They prefer Latino.
My family is Jamaican and if you said that someone looks red, they would think you meant a really really fair skinned black person who looks almost white. That to them is red. And there are blacks who refer to other blacks because they look 'yella' (sometimes mixed children).
And then you are gonna have the people who say forget nationalities. Just say you are American.
You know what would be even better? Introduce yourself and use your NAME as YOUR description of YOURSELF! It is the only personal label we all have!
Damn skippy!

I , for one, never use racial identifiers unless it's is something that is absolutely cr5ucial to the story... even if I am quoting someone's story, I will think twice to see if they used a racial identifier and I will try to see if it is something that is crucial to the story before repeating it,
Actually, it was this process of thinking that led me to my blog about what people use to identify themselves:

1. Hispanic comes from Hispan~a, meaning Spain, so many Latin Americans resent being named after the conquerors...
2. Caucasion isn't perfect either, it refers to the caucasus mountains, and used to be used in comparison to "negros" and "mongoloids". I myself prefer "European American", since I am such a EuroMutt that I can't pick one nationality.
I am American. Short and sweet :)
