Innovating Change

Change is all around us. It is what shaped the past and will one day shape the future. However, our generation has allowed the voice of ground-breaking, revolutionary change, that shaped so many generations past, to slow to a sluggish crawl. This deafening voice brought about voting rights for women in the Women’s Rights Movement, it brought about equal opportunities for African-Americans in the Civil Rights Movement, and finally it was the voice of a generation in the Anti-War Movement of the 60’s.

Amid today’s social unrest, financial uncertainty, and political turmoil you would think that the passion for change would be more vigorous than ever. However, the lack-luster attitude and blatant disregard for current events that many people exhibit, frankly leaves me in awe. I find myself asking where has the passion gone? When did this generation lose its voice? When did the actions of today’s latest celebrity become more important than the world around us?

I’m left wishing for times past when vivacious women marched their way to the voting booth, when proud African-Americans declared “We will be free”, and when thousands of students rallied to protest an unjust war. With such mighty influences from the past, how can we be so uninvolved today? How can we have so much to say but do so little? I don’t pretend to have the answers to all these questions. I am really not sure what will inspire an entire generation to leave their tv’s and video games behind and take a stand.

I’m not trying to say that every person sits idly by on their couch while the world dissolves around them, but our generation as a whole has left something to be desired. We need to open our eyes and realize what is important. Bringing peace to the Middle-East! Enacting equal rights for the gay community! Ending the destruction of our planet! And that is just to name a few. We need to unify. We need to come together and speak with a single voice. We need to prove to the world that our generation does have a passion for change, and it is extraordinarily powerful.
