Burning the American Flag

Should the act of burning the American flag be illegal? or should we just let stand the Supreme Court ruling that burning or desecrating the American flag is protected by the bill of rights.

Some Americans believe there should be an amendment prohibiting the desecration of the American flag. Some say that burning the American flag is protected by our freedom of speech from the Bill of Rights, no matter how offensive it may be.

When it all comes down to our Constitutional rights, I believe that even though the American flag is a glorious symbol of the US, we are free to express our beliefs even if it includes the act of desecrating the US flag.

While I do not agree with flag burning, nor is it something I will ever do, I do think that it should be a constitutionally protected speech. I have to say, however, that I think there are much more effective ways to get ones point across. From everything I have seen, flag burning is ineffective in that respect. Instead of people listening to the message one was trying to convey by burning the flag, people get offended by said flag burning and don't hear a word of what caused one to burn the flag in the first place.

The flag is a symbol just like any other. It's not the heart of our country, nor is it who we are. Our country existed before the flag was made and will survive should it ever be taken away. The flag only represents those things that bring us together. People can burn flags until their hearts are content, but that action will never change who we are or the fact that we are united. Take, for example, the Cross. Look how many strange things have been done to/with it. Has that in any way made Christians or Christianity any less? Not at all. They still believe just as firmly and the religion is still the same.

On another note, proper disposal of a flag is by burning it. The only difference is the mindset of the one burning the flag and last I heard, being entitled to have and express our own opinions was one of the greatest things about American society.

I definitely think that the flag should never be burned, but it is a way to express your views. Because of this it is under the protection of Freedom of Speech.
