My best friend has AIDS - now what?

A few months ago, one of my best friends in the whole world confessed to me that she has HIV/AIDS. I had never met anyone with AIDS before, and I can admit i was at quite a shock.
"I've had it for about a year now," she told me. "The love of my life died from it, and it wasn't clear to me at the time why he had gone so suddenly. But, when I went in for a check up about a month after he passed, I tested positive for AIDS. At that moment, I knew. He died from it, and now i had it too."
She was only 13 when she contracted this disease.

I don't think that many people realize the dangers of unprotected sex until they see a movie that stays with them, or hear a story on the news like this, or meet someone who actually has a life threatening disease to fully grasp it. I know i didn't. I even know people who think that unprotected sex is only something that happens in third world countries and not in our hometown where we are perfectly "safe" from infection. It's ignorance about unprotected sex and AIDS that leads to STDs.

And another thing, I also know people who think that AIDS isn't anywhere in the world except Africa or only homosexual males can contract it makes me angry. If a thirteen year old girl can get it, certainly close to anyone can.

Its important to know information about how communties tie in with the bigger world piture. Many people see the big picture, like AIDS in africa, and fail to realize that these things hit close to home too. When teaching students about these things it shold be ade clear how close to home the problem has been.

When I here aboout such young people contracting AIDS/HIV I get nervouse because the lower the education the faster the spread.

Good post
