Women: Why are we degrading ourselves?

Tagged:

I was watching the American Music Awards last night with my sister while I was working on a biology project. As the show progressed, I was increasingly disturbed by the way women were portrayed. The sad thing was that it wasn't the men who were degrading the women: the women were degrading themselves. The Pussycat Dolls took the stage, gyrating around and swinging on poles as they sang about how they wanted guys to throw themselves on them. Nelly Furtado wore a completely see-through dress as she performed her new single. There were numerous other examples of women putting themselves on a display of sexuality throughout the show. In the '60s and '70s, women were all about independence and making sure that they were not simply seen as sex toys. It almost seems now like our generation's young women want men to see them in a sexual light. Girls post promiscuous photos of themselves on social networking sites like Facebook and MySpace, desiring for men to leave comments and look through their profiles. Is it because women are desperate for attention? I think it's about time for our generation's females to stand up for showing that we are more than just pretty faces. We need to stop supporting flashy music artists who put their bodies on constant display and support women who use their minds to boost their careers. Most of all, we need to hold each other as women accountable and show that women have more to offer than a lap dance!

with Nelly Furtado wearing a see through dress. The Pussycat Dolls (what a stupid name) annoy me, so I'm biased in that respect. What is so wrong with wearing a see through dress? So you can see her body. So what? If she were a statue or a painting you wouldn't have a problem with it.

The way women in the media use their body is not symbolic of power but of oppression. There is a difference between sensuality and slutiness. I see slutiness in the media. Too often people equate positive sexuality/sensuality with negative whorish, public behavior. There is that stereotype that men have successfully instilled in young women and that women blindly follow ,that, in order to be a "strong", "daring", "risky", "brave" woman you have to be ok with going around in little or no clothing. I don't see how that is admirable. As I said, there is a difference with sexuality/sensuality and whorish/slutty behavoir.

that is is a woman's choice. I think it is simply women accepting and expressing their sexuality. As a woman, I wholly appreciate the power of my body as it affects men.

I actually feel that belief that the behaviour you've described is degrading is more damaging to women than the behaviour itself.

Women who are really sexy and strong have nothing to prove. When I look at pussycat dolls, they are desperate to show that they are strong and sexy instead of being sexy!

I agree.
