When I saw the newest ProgressiveU poll, I admit, I had no idea what it was talking about. That's why I went off to CNN.com and found the following article, plus a couple others: http://www.cnn.com/2007/POLITICS/08/28/craig.arrest/index.html?iref=newssearch
Hm...So, an actively anti-gay senator from Ohio is arrested for attempting to solicite sex with another man in an airport bathroom? Try and tell me that's not irony. OK, that's not really point - though Ill come back to that.
At first I wasn't sure if I beleived what had happened was worth an arrest. Of course, I was only halfway through the article and hadn't gotten to juciest parts. At that point in time I had passed the initial discription of some of the senator's actions and was reading through the various other comments. The article describes the officer involved recalling how Craig was peering through a gap in the bathroom stall at him, fidgeting with his fingers. While that is very creepy, I couldn't help thinking that an arrest for that may have been a little excessive. When they described down the Senator handed the officer his card after the incident, saying "What do you think of that?" I wasn't really sure what I thought of that. It's possible that could have been misinterpreted, but it's definately odd bevahior...
Then we got to the full description. I'm still pretty skeptical about the whole "individuals engaging in lewd conduct use their bags to block the view from the front of their stall." That seems like a pretty broad generalization to me. Next was the "the senator then tapped his right foot, 'a signal used by persons wishing to engage in lewd conduct.'"
...I don't really buy that any kind of judgement could or should be based on that. A person could tap their foot for any number of reasons, purposely or not. However, the senator sliding his foot over to touch the officer's foot in the next stall over and feeling around under the barrier between the two stalls...yeah, that's definately at least an attempt to solicate some kind of sexual activity. I'm sorry, but you don't touch the foot of the person in the next stall because you have "a wide stance..." Besides, if he was peeing, why was in a stall rather than at a urinal? Anyway - mildly off point.
It was also interesting to read, after the re-telling of the incident in the bathroom, that this man has been previously investigated for having "sexual relationships with congressional pages."
Of course, being an avid supporter of the rights of the GLBT (Gay Lesbian Bi Transexual) community, my favorite part of the whole story is the senator has actively attacked those rights. He has voted against legalizing same-sex marriages, voted against a bill that would make discrimination against an employee because of sexual orientation illegal and has even gone so far as to try to restrict hate crimes from including such things as gay bashings. To me that just screams karma, and even if it doesn't...They do always say that the most fiercely anti-gay and homophobic men are always overcompensating for their own closeted homosexual feelings...
In any case, you've gotta admit, as far as the crimes for which he has been arrested...he's no Mark Foley.

Just so you know.
The hypocrisy of members of the GOP just makes me laugh. Not that Democrats aren't like that, many are.
It's just that a party that says it is all about "family values" containing people that do things like this is just too much for me.
it is ironic how the senator's future ended up. i also agree with you that it was karma that caused the senator to get caught in a scandal.
So funny. I'd laugh out loud if I hadn't been singing along with the music from my MP3 player whilst reading this. There should be a picture of this guy next to the definition of "irony" in every dictionary printed from this day forward. For real. That's crazy. I didn't know what it was talking about either but I figured it was like... the officer obtaining information about the senator illegally or something of that sort. This... this is much more interesting, though.
