We all begin to look at career choices while we are still in high school. We might pick something out that we have been dreaming of for years, or were born to do. The rest of us may have developed an interest for a career over the years. Many of us will change our paths several times to fit our changing ideals or changing environment. Nevertheless, with the changing demographics, workforce and availabililty of jobs, one question may influence our decision the strongest: should we choose a job for the money or for fulfillment?
The questions is simple for many-there might even be many careers where both factors are included. It may seem like a choice that does not exist. When I was younger I wanted to get a doctorate degree and be a professor at a traditional college. I knew it would provide a comfortable living and it would also be prestigous. As my living situations changed and I became responsible for other people, my career direction changed paths. I decided that I wanted to help people-particularily those who are disadvantaged and lack opportunities. So my career path now is community development, and I know that the pay will not be sufficient.
So for me, it is whatever is in my heart. For others, it could be different reasons. But the face of the economy is changing-would it be smarter to build a career that promises at least stability?
