A question for all you, "Global Warming, we're to blame, we are going to die." What about the Global Cooling scare of the 70's where scientists thought that the world was getting colder thanks to mankind. Hmm, Al Gore now seems like a guy who has way to much free time on his hands.
One more thing for you to chew on. You've learned about vikings right? Remember they landed on Greenland and explored all of it, well thats because Greenland was green. There is evidence that beneath the ice is plant matter from when plants covered Greenland. Like I've said time and time again, this is a natural cycle that happens, the Earth will warm up, enough that Greenland will infact be green again. This is like argueing against the Magnetic Pole Shift. To me it is useless. The Earth will warm up and the Magnetic Poles will switch like they've done for millions of years.
I mean there was global warming when the dinosaurs roamed the earth, and that sure as hell wasn't manmade.

Al Gore got me interested in Global Warming. So I have been trying to get a handle on the science behind it. I have been reading the Intergovernmental Panal on Climate Change 4th Assessment Report (IPCC AR4). It is 847 pages and for someone whose area of science is NOT climatology, reading it is excruciatingly tedious. But it DOES cover the science very well.
I don't feel as confident with the science yet as I plan to be, but I can respond to some of your objections.
This is an overhyped misrepresentation of the science back in the 70's. The story can be traced back to an overly enthusiastic report in the popular press ... NOT the scientific journals ... of the research of a single person who made an unjudicious claim based on a temporary cooling trend between 1940 and 1970. The scientific community as a whole NEVER thought global cooling was happening. This article from the REALCLIMATE blog discusses the problem in detail.
Er ... no. Ice has covered much of Greenland for at least 110,000 years. The Vikings only had a few settlements on the southern shore, which is still green today.
Yes, there have been times warmer than now. But according to the IPCC AR4, but is unlikely (less than 10% chance) that there has been at any time in the past 640,000 years.
This graph shows the concentration of Methane (CH4; in Red), the concentration of Carbon Dioxide (CO2; in blue) and inferred temperature (in black). These data are taken from Antarctic Ice Cores. Air bubbles get trapped inside the ice giving us "fossil atmosphere". The ice cores can be dated back 640,000 years.
The temperature data is inferred from the ratio of carbon-12 to carbon-13. Carbon-12 and Carbon-13 are stable isotopes of Carbon. Carbon-12 has 6 protons and 6 neutrons. Carbon-13 has 6 protons and 7 neutrons. The higher the temperature the easier it is to get Carbon-13 into the atmosphere, so we expect to see a slightly increased proportion of Carbon-13 during warmer years. Using the most recent layers of the ice cores and comparing C-12 to C-13 ratios during times of known temperatures allows us to calibrate the data.
The graph can be somewhat confusing in that as the curves proceed to the right we are going BACKWARD in time. But notice the sharp rise in CO2 and CH4 concentrations in the ice core strata as we enter into historic times. This is absolutely unprecedented at any time in history. The greater part of this rise has occurred in the last 50 years. It is greater than similar relatively rapid rises and those occurred over a 5,000 year span.

METHANE comes from Cow farts, the majority of it. Go kill cows to stop this "global warming" that doesn't exist. I take that back, the earth is warmer, but it will cool down... it's a cycle... as said in the blog. Read my comment below.

QT says:
Wrong. It does come from agricultural sources but ruminants account for only 15% of it. Look at that graph in the post above. The concentration of methane in the preindustrial age was around 700 parts per billion (ppb). It is now over 1700 ppb. Again the vast majority of that rise has occurred in the past 50 years. That is absolutely unparralelled at any time in at least the last 650,000 years. ... And it is human caused.
Methane is 21 times more potent as a Greenhouse Gas than is CO2. There are huge amounts of it in the artic tundra and in the ocean depths. Both of which can become releaseable stores if Global Warming continues.

just FYI water vapor accounts for MOST of the green house gas effect. Look it up.

Greenland and Iceland were misnomers...lol. The Vikings thought it was hilarious,

Greenland was called Greenland so that people would think it was green and would want to come. Iceland, in the same sense, was called iceland to ward off people from visiting. Funny...
ps,
i'm viking, and i find it rather ingenious.

LET ME SAY THIS, and I'm only going to say this once...
GLOBAL WARMING IS BS. So, the earth may be warming, but it's not our fault. Like Son_of_Disaster said, it's a natural cycle. You know, we had like what 2 or 3 ice ages? That meant it had to cool, then melt...
Also, Al Gore is lying. He is forging evidence. One BIG thing is this: he takes a picture of an iceberg and places it next to another iceberg. One is small, the other noticeably bigger. Okay, lets look at it first. The smaller iceberg is a picture of one from the 70's. This iceberg is ABNORMALLY small for an iceberg, everyone was scared. Alright, now the iceberg that's bigger. That was a picture taken during when they were abnormally large. OH, and for the record, icebergs get big and small and big and small all the time, it's a cycle.
Follow the link, and you'll see SCIENTIFIC evidence that clearly goes against what al gore has said. He lies.
Global Warming is Fake
Oh, and just look how "green" al gore really is:

Green is a term for conservation or eco-friendly actions/people/things. In that sense, he is far from green, considering he's buried in paper (from trees), and is running three 21"+ monitors as well as a television, all of which are consuming a decent chunk of electricity, which is typically generated from burning fossil fuels.

that's my point with the picture, he talks of being green and he isn't.

I'm far too tired to join in this debate. But there's one point that no one's mentioned...
Mars is warming, too. And I'm pretty sure that's not because of those damn Excursions.
The evidence is not as strong as global warming denialists would have you believe.
Furthermore, the only way Mars warming would be of any importance to the debate on EARTH's global warming would be if the solar radiation was responsible for it. We have MUCH better readings for the solar flux over the years than we do for the climate on Mars. The solar flux cannot explain Earth's global warming.

I'm not going to try to argue with anyone too seriously about this issue because unfortunately there is no real way to prove who's right or wrong until these events actually happen. However I would like to comment on a few things I noticed were mentioned about global warming: when the dinosaurs were around and it getting warmer on Mars. The fact is that in both of these situations the chemicals that caused the depletion in a planet's protection against rays from the sun are naturally ocurring. In the case of the dinosaurs they lived during the time when the earth was just coming into existence therefore there were plenty of volcanic eruptions forcing plenty of chemicals into the atmosphere, in the case of Mars it's pretty much the same. Now it just happens that many of these same chemicals are quite unwittingly being mass produced by big industries for our own conveniences. But like I said this is just another way of looking at things, none of us is going to have the opportunity to say I told you so because we most likely won't be here when it all goes down.
