Disappointed... Do your research

I have to say I have been highly disappointed in the ProgressiveU community so far. I thought there might be a lot of intelligent informed young people speaking about the issues. However most students blogging here are only doing it for the opportunity to maybe win a scholarship whereas I am a passionate blogger.

I kind of run like 5 blogs in total but I have two main ones. I have my personal blog and I have a socio-political blog. Those are my main ones and I blog here sometimes.

Anyway a lot of discussions I have heard as comments on blog posts here have disappointed me. Not in the sense that someone said something silly. Just in the sense that they were already forming an opinion on something they had clearly not been informed about or done research on.

Everytime I tell someone out loud or blog about a political idea I have I thought long and hard about it and researched it before I come out expressing my opinion. The reason is that I have encountered plenty of fools who spew out an opinion based on their party or their parents political views and never really thought about it on their own.

Thus when I discuss with people the issues people take me seriously because I have thought very hard and done my homework to come to these conclusions.

I am more than happy to discuss with people to help them research/understand/form an opinion on issues. But do not expect me to necessarily respect your opinion if you have nothing to back it up.

There is so much you could learn if you payed attention to the news especially the independent news and the blogosphere.

My socio-political blog that I was talking about is this one: http://neogaia.stumbleupon.com/

I put a lot of effort and more importantly thought into it and as a result people are impressed of the views I hold at the age of only 17.

Also something young people run into a lot is that adults will disregard our opinions sometimes because we are young. That happens to me sometimes. But if you backup your political opinions/views with research and thought they will take you more seriously.

I just want people to find out the truth for themselves by being informed. All too often people don't inform themselves and form opinions that aren't necessarily based on the truth. This creates a problem where the average person isn't informed and when a person who is informed educates them on a topic they will usually be reluctant to hear because so few people are expressing that view. Thus an apathetic/not informed majority makes it difficult for the minority of those who are informed to get things done.

So what needs to happen is for there to stop being a minority of people who are informed and turn that into a majority. I think most people want to know that truth right now but they don't really now how we can do that and those of us who know where to turn to be informed should help them leran where to go to be able to inform themselves.

I too have noticed many blogs and forum posts that seem ignorant, it's disheartening when a person tries to make an intellectual argument and instead they make a big blunder. I try my best to do my research before I reply to a blog, but some people seem like they simply write for the mere thought of writing. I hope that more people on this site will begin to think with their head, instead of their fingers.

"ipsa scientia potesta est"

Thanks for the compliment! I took Latin in middle school and high school so I know what that says.

I constantly blunder even when I'm trying to think. Its the nature of my humanity I guess.

But its good to encourage people to learn and get different views.

Naturally people are going to make mistakes. I don't think that's whats being said.

I think the point is that people post just to post, they talk without ever really saying anything. And for people that take time to educate themselves and learn all the sides of a topic before formulating an opinion, it's disheartening.

lol, I agree. I did get his point. I was just being self depreciating because I'm aware I cannot reach this very admirable goal.

"lol, I agree. I did get his point."

I am glad you got my point. But I am a she aka Female afterall.

Don't worry people often assume I am a guy because I know so much about politics (and when people don't know the gender of the person and politics is involved they usually assume its a male speaking) and they don't realize that Rocio is a girl's name in Spanish.

I am glad you try to learn about the issues. That is probably the biggest step that people need to take is just even trying to know the issues.

ohhhhh. Sorry about that. I did not know that rocio was a girls name in Spanish. In fact I used my very little Spanish knowledge that there was an o at the end of your name to indicate masculine. Well, I learned something new today. I love days when that happens.

Hey, I liked what you had to say, and I love your name. I just have to say you came off as kind of snooty and worldly. Perhaps you are very worldly, and I believe that you do your work and know your stuff, but I still think that we can't know everything at such a young age (I'm 18). There are so many sides to every conflict and we've only had 17+ years to experience the world and research this, and that includes years where we couldn't even feed ourselves! I get you though; it is frustrating encountering communities of kids that don't seem to care about the world outside of their expensive sunglasses and ipod head phones. So keep doing what you love, and work that awesome name.
