"Ah. Bathroom break at last! That pizza that I had at lunch didn't sit well today. Gotta hurry though. I only have 15 minutes......
Much better. Oh it's time for math. Where is my math book? .... Oh man. I really have to pee. My stomach was so upset that I didn't have time to go number one. I'll just ask the teacher if I can use the bathroom really quick.... Ok.... My hand's been in the air for about a year.
'Ms. Smith! Can I use the bathroom. I really have to go number one.'
'You had your 15 minutes not even 5 minutes ago.'
'I know but I didn't have to go then.'
'Then you can wait till the next bathroom break.'
'No. I really can't'
'You will or I will send you to the office'
Great. I really really really have to pee. I don't think I can hold it. I'll try though.... Ok, Math..... Uh Oh....
'Please Ms. Smith! I really have to go.'
'One more word and you will go to the office.'
My Dad will get mad at me if I get sent to the office. But I REALLY have to go.... Grr....... Oh man......
UH OH.... I HAVE TO GET OUT OF HERE SO NO ONE SEES THAT I HAVE PEED MYSELF."
This is the scene my 10 year old brother suffered the other day in school. He had to go number 2 during the 15 minute bathroom break. He forgot to pee. And his teacher wouldn't let him go to the bathroom. So he ended up peeing himself in the middle of class and he was so embarrassed that he just got up and walked out without saying a word to the teacher or any students. He went to the nurses to get a pair of pants and called my mother. He begged her to come pick him up. So she did, because of how upset he was. Nothing has been done yet and from my knowledge, they haven't said anything to the teacher yet because the school is trying to handle it quietly.
I, as his sister, am ENRAGED at the school. This is absolutely ridiculous. If the school really wants to monitor students who go to the bathroom, then have people walk the halls. I can't imagine what my brother went through emotionally.
I'm curious what should be done and what everyone thinks about this. Especially because it seems like a lot of teachers are becoming this way. At least in my area they are.

the simple truth is that he had his time and didn't go. i know what your saying, but you do have to look at the teachers side of the story too....
I understand the teachers side, but if you have a student that is sitting there, begging you to use the restroom, why would you completely dismiss that and think, "He had his time so too bad for him." Teachers are not only teaching children, but they are suppose to be looking out for them too. There have been times where my stomach has been so upset that number one just didn't happen until I was out of the bathroom. There has to be other ways to monitor kids when they need to go.

The simple truth is that it's ridiculous to tell a child that, during the entire school day, s/he is only allowed to use the facilities during recess and a 15 minute break.
Why should each child's digestive and urinary systems be forced to comply with the school's schedule, when teachers (by OSHA law) are free to use the restroom whenever the need arises?
A good amount of urinary dysfunction in children is caused by unhealthy voiding patterns taught in schools.
here is an example of a teacher stating why it is ok to prevent a child from using the restroom during classtime, and a response from a medical professional, stating why it is not, in fact, a good idea.

i suggest a hall monitor or a leader in an elementary class that handles bathroom breaks. If somebody needs to go then that person escorts them to the bathroom or just makes sure that nobod ditches. Also, since your brother is a 10 yr. old, why would the teacher think that he's kidding? Kids have bladder problems and other issues that they haven't exactly mastered yet.
That's what I thought. If teachers are really concerned with kids goofing off by lying to go to the bathroom, then have someone that will monitor them. I just think it's absolutely rediculous that a teacher, who is looking out for the well-being of other children, is letting this happen. That teacher might need a re-evaluation.

That is ridiculous. Children should be peeing 4 to 7 times each day. When you gotta go, you gotta go. Especially when you're ten.
Aside from the emotional trauma, there are som health risks involved with "holding it" for too long. If you do it too often, you have a nice chance of getting a urinary tract infection. It can cause damage to bladder and kidneys. It can stretch the bladder so that, when you do urinate, there is still some fluid remaining in the bladder that may lek out later (incontinence). It can weaken brain-bladder signals so that you don't know when you have to pee.
I know it was just one incident, but from that one incident, maybe he'll learn to just hold it better next time. And the time after that. Be sure to let him know that he didn't do anything wrong and he should always go use the bathroom when he needs to.
I would also call the school and demad someone talk to the teacher, instead of waiting to hear if anything has happened.
here is a good website to check out regarding the issue.

That website is great. I printed out a few of those pages and hope to bring them into his school so they can see how dangerous it is. I don't think that teacher should be removed from the school, but I feel that something should be said regardless of the outcome. For a teacher to think a 10 year old can "hold it" is disgusting.
