My people My people we must move on
For many years we were kept as slaves
told how we could and couldn't behave
from cooking, cleaning, farming we did it all
But is that an excuse for now us to fall?
on our behinds what can we get from that
Always being the last to find the treasure
always known as the follower
My people My people we must move on

Using slavery as an excuse no that was many years ago
stand up and be someone's hero
Stop the little boys and girls from smoking weed
teach them that hey'll never succeed...
if they choose that path
17 years old ignorant of basic math
my people my people we must move on

In Africa we were treated as Queens and Kings
But in the media we're percieved to settle for anything...
My people my people we must move on...

I love my culture and I'm blessed to be an african american women whose ancesors overcame oppression, descrimination, prejudice, segregation, and racism...but so many times i see people using the past as a footstool to get to the future. So many times i see men using slavery as an excuse and a reason behind them no being able to get off their behinds to go to work...i jus think this should be addressed because its a serious issue and you cant expect to move forward if you continue to go backwards. I see the looks on childrens faces who don't believe they will ever amount to anything because of what they come from. As a result they turn to prositution and sex because they don't believe they are beautiful enough. I want to send a message out to those that there is still hope...Do not lose faith. God said Ecclesiastes 9:11 the race is not given to swift nor the battle to the strong but he who endures

Effort is only half the battle. Social and cultural capital and systematic oppression is the other half.

I'm sure that there are people out there who "might" still use slavery as an excuse, however, the U.S. regardless of of it's many freedoms has a tendency to oppress it's members. Whether African Americans, Latinos, Indians, Asians, women, homosexuals, etc., most of the country gets oppressed. The system makes it hard to get out of a crap hole if it's the one that put you there in the first place. One starts his/her live in a bad neighborhood with limited opportunities, goes to a school that is not economically supported because it's in a bad neighborhood and because kids are dropping out to get jobs, the school is graded even more poorly because of drop out rates, bad grades, etc. One has a child in this neighborhood, who they can't constantly watch and make sure that they are going to school because they are trying to work to provide for their family. The child's support system is not there (not because they don't want to, but because they can't). The child might get involved in bad things. He/she might drop out of school to get a job or to join a gang..Some get out. But for the most part, society makes it hard for them to get out...Systematized oppression occurs all over, and it's even harder on minorities living in poor areas. They can get out if they so choose and have some kind of support, but many don' see that as an option.

No one alive today can use slavery as an excuse because they didnt live to experience it. Those who do, are spouting stupidity and ignorance, in my opinion, and need to quit making excuses.
