Jesus Camp

I just finished watching the movie Jesus Camp, and if you have not seen it, I recommend it to everyone. It is a documentary about a woman who runs an evangelical camp for children. It is scary to see these things on film. It is especially scary because the filmmakers did not shoot this in an attacking manner i.e. Michael Moore, but merely, shot the footage of the camp and interviews with the woman and attendees. These people are willing to do anything to spread their message. The problem is their message is not just simply love Jesus. This woman is preaching to small children about how voting for conservatives will save this country. Their mantra seems to be "one nation under God." On more than one occasion, she tells the children they are in a war, and makes them cry. She justifies this by saying that our enemies in Islam give their children guns so we must also "teach" our children at an equally young age.

When approached by a doubtful radio personality, the woman says that she does not consider what she is doing to be brainwashing. She says democracy will fail because of the sinners in America so the only way to victory is through converting everyone in our country to Christianity. The mood is lightened during the film when Ted Haggard is featured preaching against homosexuality despite the fact that we know now that he liked to hire male prostitutes.

A viewer is forced to confront this faction in America that is die hard about their belief system, no evolution, no homosexuals, no abortions, no global warming. All of these ideas are featured in the film. What is going to happen to America if the quiet majority sit still while this growing and vocal minority try to push their ideas of intolerance out to the rest of the world. The movie shows young children taught to love Bush, and that liberalism is dead. This intolerance is clearly not founded in Christian values or American values. It is an eye-opening film that is extremely thought provoking. I recommend it to anyone who cares about this country or has an interest in religious groups. It is a great look at how a group of Americans choose to live their life, and how they force their children into that lifestyle.

im a counselor at church camp and it is the greastest expirence ever. i love being there and hearing everyones stories. -Jazziy

I was not trying to demean people who are counselors at church camps. I have volunteered my time at a lot of youth religious activities. What I am is trying to point out is the idea of brainwashing kids to go to war when they are 8. Teaching children about positive Christian values is a great experience, but teaching those values with a context of intolerance toward other values is dangerous.

it scares me as well. I heard of this movie about a week ago and have been wondering whether I should even watch it or not. I saw a preview of it and the woman making the comment about children in Iran struck me as well. I think that a lot of people need to remember the age old saying of "two wrongs don't make a right." And just because the children in Iran are becoming narrowmindedly...(i dont know if thats a word...but whatever) influenced at an extremely young and vulnerable age. Doesn't make it right to do here in America.

I'll definitely have to watch this now >.<
