Laugh in the New Year

So, everyone has been plotting and planning their resolutions for next year over the last few days. Apparently, it's the thing to do... ring in the New Year by resolving to do something. I quite happily have no resolutions. It's not necessarily because there isn't anything I want to do. It's more that there is nothing I want to do enough to obsess over a resolution for the next year. Instead, I've spent the last few days doing what I always do... reading, writing, and spending equal amounts of time on ProgressiveU and spoiling the boys.

I just really don't understand the entire point of resolutions enough to bother seriously with them. Anything I do manage to come up with is more to make me laugh than to be serious about it. That's what it should be about. A new year and more humor. There isn't enough of that in the world as it is. We're all far too serious about things.

I mean, the fact that we pick one day a year to make resolutions and then spend another 364 obsessing over the fact that we failed to keep the resolutions we made says something for uber seriousness about the whole business. Why do we pick one day of the year to make resolutions? And why do we make resolutions that we generally have no intention of keeping? It's so much easier to resolve to do things throughout the year without all the added pressure of remember to write 2008 (which I will fail to remember to do until at least May) and actually keep the resolutions we make to ourselves. And it's so much less stressful to resolve to do something fun.

So, this year I'm again not making a resolution. I'm going to keep doing the things I do and being happy with life. Sure, sometimes life sucks... that's part of the beauty of the thing. It's unpredictable and wild and often makes little sense. I'm happy with that. It's as it should be. Sometimes life sucks... and sometimes it doesn't make any sense. Who cares? That's what makes it ours!

Tonight, I'm paying homage to that philosophy and I'm writing in the New Year. And of course, I'm laughing in the New Year. That's really the only way to greet a whole New Year. Creating things that really have nothing to do with you, laughing at the things that do and remembering that whichever category it falls into... it's yours and yours alone.

Somehow, that just seems fitting this year. Life is bound to be insane. Enjoy the hell out of it and stop worrying and obsessing over the things that really don't matter.

And, having said all of that... I must needs share this video with you to make you laugh (and if you don't... I worry for your health).

oooo I know what you could resolve to do this year! You could resolve to stick more banana stickers on Alo! :-)

I don't have any resolutions either. I figure if somethings important enough to do you should resolve to do it when you realize it's important enough to do, not wait until a new year to resolve to do it :-)
