Scholarships are a fantastic way to earn and win supplemental funds for school. Which to a "starving student" a $500 to $1000 dollar scholarship may not look like much when you first examine it, however there are times that even an extra $50-$100 till payday or til you can get more money from mom and dad can a wonderful thing. Many students overlook the types of scholarships that pay only $250 or $500 however for the amount of work that is involved in writing an essay or whatever other requirement the scholarship award committee may have, are negligable. If you can accumulate multiple scholarship awards for these smaller amounts however they can quickly add up. Also a lot of the scholarships in this group you may have noticed state that they pay the winner in their name rather than the name of you r school so you may use the money for whatever you like. If you have gone to sites like fastweb.com or others you will see that the number of these small scholarships abound. For the sponsors it is a tax write off, it is a way of giving back to the comunity that they serve and it is also a great way to advertise for businesses. Take a second look at this category of scholarships again if you need help funding your dream of a college education with money that you don't ever have to pay back.

yeah, sigh, thats what I'm doing. Theres an awful lot of competition too. But worth it. You do have to look into the tax consequences though.

My fiancee is a senior financial aid specialist at the local college. He says that scholarships, grants, and loans have no tax liabitiies.
Thats good to know. I was told the little ones, especially those mailed directly to you do have tax consequences. But I'm not an accountant. The best thing to do is check the particular scholarship if there is question with an accountant.

Its probably a good idea to go for the small ones because not as many people will. scholarships seem so unattainable to be having just started trying to win them. Like what are the possibilty that I'm going to win over all the people. Its just disheartening.
Like telemarketing it is a numbers game when you are applying for scholarships. You submit an application to every scholarship that you meet the requirements for and the chances of your receiving one or more go way up. Like they say every little bit helps!
yeah, i write the essays in spare time, and then send them off and forget about them and move on to the next one. its the best i can do and saves me from worrying.
