I'm looking for a girl, or several, who likes current, mainstream rap, to explain to me why. It has continually mystified me and my friends. For example, in my art class, we are allowed to listen to the radio. There is a group of girls who are never happy unless it's playing rap. And I'm not talking about Black Eyed Peas. They and other bands like them, play what could be musically defined as rap, but which actually has good messages. Where Is The Love is a wonderful song. But no, what they like is the stuff which is incredibly degrading to women, not to mention to the people singing it, as it implies all they think about is sex and status. I can almost see how guys might like that kind of stuff, seeing it as a symbol of what they “should” be. But why would women love something which reduces them to mere objects, there for men’s convenience, and discarded when they are no longer needed. In the music videos, it often seems that the women are just there to make the man look good, like he can have anyone. The DJ on the station the girls I mentioned like to listen to sometimes plays a song “for the ladies.” And those songs are always the worst! The ones it seems that girls like best, are the ones with the most distinct and vulgar messages that girls are only there for sex, when it’s convenient for the men. I am truly curious, what do you like about it?
