English is the national language? OMG how long did it take them to figure it out...

Tagged:  •

So apperantly the law makers are gathering to pass a law that would make English the main language.

My question is, HOW LONG DOES it take to figure that OUT!  it was founded on English, the anthem is in english, the laws are in English! I do not want to sound Racist, but the main language should be english. I mean, sure you can make the kids learn spanish too., it will help them to learn something new. But what did they expect? We can't have some people speaking english, some spanish and so forth.

What do they do in Japan? They learn their language, than learn english. why can't we do that? Have one main language. Speak spanish when the person you speak to speaks it. But don't be angry that when you speak spanish, that the other person only learns english

I agree totally.

Declaring the national language is just silly.

It further divides us from these hispanics that we're already too far divided from.

It's silly, plus wastes their time. they could be passing other laws

I kind of like them wasting their time. We already have tens of thousands of laws. We really don't need many more. As for English as a national language, I'm for it. Over 90% of nations worldwide have at least one national language (many have several and over 30 have English as one of theirs). It saves a fortune in printing costs and streamlines governmental functions. Contrary to some opinions, it makes it easier to do business worldwide, especially for our officials. Also, It doesn't outlaw speaking of other languages. It just says "We do business in English first."

I think the problem was America was based on such an amalgam of cultures (yes, founded by the English, but think of the mass immigrations afterwords) there was reason it's called the "melting pot" thus making it extremely difficult to make the national language anything. I personally think we should make our national language "Esperanto" but I'm dumb like that.

America was founded under religion too. Should we make the Christian majority happy by making Christianity the 'National Religion?'

Well no. But why should kids learn spanish too? Why not French? Canadian? how is that fair?

The fact is that America has a strong hispanic population. In the near future, it will only become stronger and for many people Spanish will be a common occurence. It is going to happen regardless of what the 'national language' is and Americans NEED to be prepared. The cultural makeup of America is changing, and people don't want to accept it.

You mean Canadian is considered a foreign language? Wow! You learn something new everyday!

Also, "should" isn't quite the word. No one's forcing those poor kids to learn Spanish. Then again, maybe you just live in a very strict district.

You like to bash me, don't you? Why don't you listen, instead of picking at every little thing I do wrong?

I'd love to listen, except for you don't have anything to say to begin with. Instead of giving a decent answer to the poster above me, for example, you conveniently said no and quickly moved on to something about how unfair it is for kids to have to learn Spanish (but not French or Canadian). Sorry, but try again.

Wow, I am sure All of your blogs are pefect. Do you give decent answers? No you do not.

I just ranted on this...My thought is that by having an official language, this allows us as a nation to be more exclusive than inclusive. The only way we're ever going to solve our immigration problems is if we become more inclusive. We need to make the illegal immigrants legal and come up with a better program for allowing others into our country. This won't happen by making English the official language.

Okay so what will? Like I said, how do we help the French, and the so many other people that speak different ways. Why do we favor one country over the other?

Why the hell not? Americans can barely speak it themselves and immigrants are nesting in ghettos that offer their kids bilingual education. I had several friends whose parents shoved them off into Russian school (mine, thank God, did not). If anything, segregation happens because people have the option of not integrating themselves into American society. You live in the US, for crying out loud. Learn to speak its language (the rest of us did).

Wow! Now that English is officially our official language, there's no valid reason to misspell "apparently," to confuse "then" with "than," to not capitalize "English" and "Spanish," to write a sentence that makes no sense, etc. etc. etc. Wow! This is such a good idea!

Wow, sorry for not being perfect. I am sure you are. Sorry, I am only human

Of course I'm not perfect. I just find it odd that you made these silly mistakes when you were basically telling everyone to speak English and only English. Silly native English speaker.

Many Germans speak better english than most Americans.

No you are not. No one is. I am not a Silly native Speaker, I was FORCED to learn the language, and so should other people

Pity. Try to read that last sentence and decide for yourself how much sense it is making.

Don't stop the learning.

Hey are you from Russia?Lay off it is people like you that are the problem.Trying put down people for what they believe or who they are.And by the way even with all thier mistakes you can still read it and are responding in english.SO HA .Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

Like Japan; I wish they would give a higher standard of education on global awareness. And yes, with this high expectation force them to learn another language by making it an educational requirement to speak it fluently.
Why do we think so low of our future (the kids)?
Making English the official language without this only sends the message that it’s okay to think that you only should have knowledge about America be globally ignorant, and only speaking American which in their opinion is English.

I'd have to disagree on that one. I think Americans should not conform to any one language. America is a state of immigrants. The whole purpose of us not having an official language was to respect and remember the fact that we all came from someplace else. I think that if the government were to declare English the official language of the United States, they would be doing something that is not patriotic.

Even if we did declare it the national language it wouldnt solve much of anything.

Also, I bet if someone went went to, lets say Mexico, how much Spanish would the average American know beside the phrase "Más tequila por favor",lol

While English has traditionally been the predominant language in our country, it is historically inaccurate to say that our country was "founded on English." In fact, there have always been a wide variety of languages spoken in this country, and the original intent of our founders was that language would be a matter for the States to address, if at all. Many or our States and Territories have a tradition of bi-lingual government...

Hawaii (English and Hawaiian)
Louisiana (English and French legally recognized, although there is no official language)
New Mexico (English and Spanish de facto)
American Samoa (Samoan and English)
Guam (Chamorro and English)
Northern Mariana Islands (English, Chamorro, and Carolinian)
Puerto Rico (Spanish and English)

The state of New York had state government documents (i.e., vital records) co-written in the Dutch language until the 1920s, in order to preserve the legacy of New Netherlands, though England annexed the colony in 1664.

Native American languages are official or co-official on many of the US Indian reservations and pueblos. In Oklahoma before statehood in 1907, territory officials debated whether or not to have Cherokee, Choctaw and Muscogee languages as co-official, but the idea never gained ground.

The idea of bi-lingualism is not as "foreign" to the United States as many seem to think.

"Ridicule is the only weapon which can be used against unintelligible propositions." ~ Thomas Jefferson, letter to Francis Adrian Van der Kemp July 30, 1816

This country wasn't really founded by the English. If you read your history right, there were the Spanish and French living here too. The English decided to do what they could to have this piece of the continent from Coast to Coast and they did whatever they could so that it could be that way. If they had never made that decision, then they would be living with numerous languages.

The United States promotes itself around the world as a giant melting pot. Different languages make America what it is today. By making English official, the citizens of the United States are limiting themselves, whether you think it or not, and think they do not have to learn another language. The United States lags far behind all other industrialized nations in multilinguilism. I am totally against making English our official language; we have managed for 231 years without a national language, so I think it will be okay. For more on this issue, and a different point of view, read my post "STOP SPEAKING ENGLISH!!!!!".
