Did you know that your emotions can make you sick?

I guess I never really thought of it before but I've learned that if you're stressed over something or really upset about something for a long period of time, it can really make you sick. Like sick to your stomach. Reason why I'm writing about this is because I've been feeling sick for a couple days now, and it's never lasted this long. I feel really sick like this when I'm really stressed about stuff or upset. And I think I'm both at this point, but I'm not really sure. It's a really bad feeling that I have right now, I mean sick wise, and I'm not exactly sure how I can make myself feel better. I thought about taking some medicine to make me feel better but I figured if it's my emotions that are making me sick then medicine will not cure it. I feel sick for a day at a time, and it feels like I am going to throw up. (sorry if that is nasty) And like I would never do it on purpose but I feel like I'm going to. Like just randomly I'll start feeling sick and it won't go away until either the next day or later in the day depending on when I start feeling sick.

I really need to learn how to feel better(emotionally) so that I can stop feeling so sick all of the time. Like I've been eating the same amount of food I usually eat, and I haven't throw it up at all. And I don't really plan on it. But it's sucks having this feeling like I am going to whenever I'm just like walking around at school, it really sucks.
I'm not sure how I can make myself feel better, emotionally, and physically. Any suggestions?

I get that too sometimes. Mostly when Im not having fun or when I am sad. But what works for me is I just concentrate on doing something else- like something thats challenging- like chemistry homework- yeah Im a nerd- but the point is to concentrate on something other than your body and how it feels for a while. I find that that also makes me feel happier and a little more energized.

When you're stressed, your body produces hormones that will kill parts of your immune system. That's why you get sick.

First of all, make sure you're eating properly, and go for a jog or something to get your mind off things. If that still doesn't work, try writing.

My anthropology teacher told me that when you are actually stressed out, your body goes into overdrive and won't let you get sick. It is actually in the relief of your stress that you usually become ill. I was pretty amazed with that, but I suppose it is the truth.

Your suggesstions sound great! I always find that working out and eating right gives me far more energy and helps me to get through stressful times without getting sick.

Your anthropology teacher is wrong. People who run marathons every week are sicker than those that run a marathon a few times a year. They are putting too much stress on their body, and stress hormones routinely kill parts of the immune system. This allows something to infect you, and you will get the symptoms of that infection. Of course, you may get sicker when your body is actually able to fight off the infection, because inflammation and fever and whatnot are our bodies' methods to destroying pathogens. This is usually because the infection is not overly harmful initially, for things such as the cold. But if you instead get infected with meningitis or tetanus, you won't be so lucky, as those pathogens actually have toxins that will kill you. That's why cancer patients get fewer colds than non cancer patients.

That happens to me, too- I get stomachaches when I'm stressed out; but, I don't have any suggestions on how to make this stop except taking two teaspoons of Pepto-Bismol.

Try to eliminate some activities in your scedule to free up some time for yourself. Soak in a hot bath with a candle going, curl up and read a book, eat right, and try getting a little exercise whenever you can squeeze it in (even if it is just running a few flights of stairs...it gets your energy going). Take care and make sure to treat yourself every once in a while!

all i had to read was the title and i'd already thought of a comment! lol, but i did read it through... yes, it's TOTALLY normal to become sick when stressed.. i'm suffering a tumtum ulser over a break up and loss of friendship with some people i honestly thought i could trust. and all right before christmas! how tacky is that? i can't even eat anything (and i do wish i could) because of this. but i'm working through it... smiles really do release some happy-hormones, even when you're crying your eyes out. lol. lame how emotions that get out of control lead to a body that's out of control...

I, unfortunately, know this feeling VERY well. There was a time in my life I spent almost two years of being sick to my stomach, unable to keep any food down, constantly throwing up......it was ALL from nerves. I was in a bad place in my life and I was constantly worried. I am so grateful that I am past that....

While you're that stressed, make sure you eat bland foods. I noticed that if I eat something with too much flavor, I feel worse. Kava Kava or Valerian root may help to calm you. Maybe you should also talk to your doctor about taking some medication for anxiety, though I am not a big fan of meds since I end up having all of the rare side effects.
