What is considered the dark side of religon . . . . .

Well I haven’t been able to think of anything to blog about, but I saw this movie yesterday that got me thinking. The movie is called "The Ninth Gate", Johnny Depp plays the lead actor. The movie is about a book collector and appraiser who is paid by a guy to find two other books supposedly written by Satan himself. The book collectors in this movie have extensive collections of works on Satan. It got me to thinking about my own personal life. I do not consider myself Satanist nor do I worship the Satan. I just find it to be a fascinating subject . I have always had a fascination for Hell or the so called “dark side” of the bible. I am a catholic and I do not worship Satan, just trying to make that clear. But in the movie is shows a lot of book relating or pertaining to Hell or Satan. I know a lot about these subjects, because I have studied it since high school. I only personally own three to five books pertaining to Hell or Satan. Not generally the Christian Hell, rather than about the “Hells” in other religions. I find it to be a interesting subject and I like looking things up about it and comparing the different views upon a opposite place of salvation of eternal glory so to speak.

Please comment and tell me what you think about this subject or if you share the same views.

I had effectively blocked The Ninth Gate from my memory. Thank you for bringing it up again. Ugghhh. :-P

If you are interested in an alternative view on Satan, you should pick up To Reign in Hell by Steven Brust. It was influenced by another story you may be interested in--Paradise Lost, by John Milton.

I'm Catholic as well, and while I don't really find the subject of "The Dark Side" fascinating, reading alternative viewpoints about it is quite intriguing.

"...There is a crushing guilt that comes with being a Catholic. Whether things are good or bad or you're simply... eating tacos in the park, there is always the crushing guilt."

I was only able to watch the first half hour up until the first murder. (That's not ruining it, a lot of people die.) The subject matter is intriguing, but the movie stinks. Johnny Depp is a better actor now in my opinion. Maybe if he did it over, it would be ok. I was most turned off by the wife of the deceased collector. Her actions weren't believable and a little too stereotypical. The movie could have been more creative. Other cultures' cosmologies concerning hell are definitely more engaging as well.
