I've always had a pretty close relationship with little creatures, mostly ants. I still like to watch them to their thing from time to time, even if it's in the middle of the sidewalk. I've saved my share of spiders and roaches from certain death when they've encroached on my loved ones' living quarters. However, there is one little insect that is indeed a pest to me--the mosquitoes. As soon as spring starts gearing up, the little ones seem to be attracted to me. I'm sick of hearing that, "It's because your so sweet, Kelly." BS. If they were smart, they would know that I'm not sweet when it comes to them and that they had better come packing because they're liable to get a beatdown.
Now, if you knew me, you'd know that I don't really get angry a lot. So, to say that I hate these little creatures and that they upset me is a big deal to me. I generally hold the stance that one should not purposely kill bugs. I make an exception for mosquitoes. I do feel a little remorseful after I end their short little lives though. It makes me feel like a bad person. I wish I knew another way to get them away from me, but for now, they must die. They eat me alive in my sleep especially. I've been sleeping poorly too because I wake of scratching the bites. I've got some ointment that works pretty well, so the pain is manageable. I'm no wimp. I get welts from these little buggers that hurt pretty bad.
I've try to be proactive and prevent them, but I'm not finding a good way to do so. I brought a bunch of Raid mosquito coils that I haven't used yet. I'm wondering if they'll be harmful to me and my family. I've got some deet spray too, but I've heard that deet can be poisoning, so that's a last resort if things get real bad. There's regular old bug spray too, but it's only marginally helpful to me since I guess I'm a mosquito magnet. Does anyone else have some other methods that are reasonable non-toxic and effective? Is there something that just repels mosquitoes and doesn't kill them that could work?
The meat of my issue here is whether or not all this justifies my mosquito murdering ways. Do they deserve to die? Probably not. Do I really hate them? Not really really. Then there's the hatred in my heart for the little guys. That can't be good. I shouldn't get so mad at a little thing going for my blood because that's what he or she was made to do. What I can't stand is how they bite me and my foster daughter. So must they die or can I get something to keep them away, but still allow them to live?

I have the same problem with mosquitoes, so I know exactly what you're going through. I also don't like to kill bugs. What I've found that works pretty well is a wristband. It's like one of those spiraly things you can put keys on and all, and it smells like lemon. It really keeps bugs away. I wear it as a hair tie. I got it several years ago, and it still works. Sadly, I don't know if they're even still around.
But if you can manage to find any sort of insect repellent wristbands, I would suggest giving them a try. The one I have smells too strongly for me to use it indoors, because of my asthma, but outdoors, it's great.
And that's comin' at ya' from yer local redneck hippie.
Don't spiders eat mosquitoes? Maybe you can breed pet spiders to get rid of the mosquitoes and abandon your murdering ways by contributing to the natural food chain!
LOL! I hate mosquitoes, too. I keep plenty of those torches and candles that repel mosquitoes as well as spray my yard to keep all of the bugs away. I am not sure what is in the yard spray stuff, but it does seem to work, I think Off makes it. Unfortunately, Deet is the best way to keep the bugs away if you're going to be outdoors all day.
Good luck with your mosquito problem!!!
...but I did get bit by one once and my leg blew up in a terrible rash.
I would do it if I wouldn't get freaked out by seeing my little pet spiders everywhere.

We are plagued with those buggers all summer! My problem with them is that I always think they aren't biting--I can't feel them at all--then the next day I find I am covered in bites. Grr. It must be because I am so insensitive. ;)
The only thing I've found that really works is DEET, and it is a terrible carcinogenic, so I usually just take it. We haven't had much trouble with West Nile or any other mosquito borne illnesses.
OH! I just remembered...REI has a line of clothing that is supposedly mosquito proof. I don't know why or how, but check REI.com. Don't know if they deliver to China, though.

lemongrass works pretty well, if you don't mind smelling like... lemongrass. ;-)

But lemongrass smells so good! I would love to smell all citrusy sweet! Sadly, it doesn't keep mosquitoes off me. Maybe it's just the special, extra tenacious Minnesota mosquitoes?

These suggestions are great. For now I've got deet, so I'll use that, but I'll stock up on the lemongrass and maybe get a special REI jacket when I'm back in the States for the summer.

I hate to kill anything as well, but I am accepting of it when the organism of interest becomes a threat to my health or safety when I have not provoked it. I won't kill a mosquito unless it is about to bite me.

There are these bugs that my family calls mosquito eaters. All they eat are mosquitos. They some what look like a mosquito but they are large and you can easily see them. People used to say the same BS thing to me about being sweet. I was outside on time for only 30 minutes and had 30 mosquito bites. The candle thingies work pretty well. They are candles in a pale and send away mosquitos. I would get some of them.
unfortuantely I don't have a friendly problem solver other then that. I just kill them. I hate to be blunt, but I have no choice. Hell all insects are attracted to me even spiders, bees etc. I don't know why but it is annoying. I don't always kill them but let's just face it all the mosquitos that bite you are female and I don't like most females except you and my other buddies. LOL I would research it to be honest.

Love comments? I do too!
Skeeter eaters! Woo! I'm pretty sure the real name for these helpful and beautiful insects are mayflies. That's what they're called around here, at least. ^-^ We let them live in our house in the summer, because they don't hurt anything, and they eat all the mean old mosquitoes.
And that's comin' at ya' from yer local redneck hippie.
I have used lemon juice on itchy spots. It makes it not itch anymore for me. I don't know about other people, since it never worked on my cousin.
The sanity within is overwhelming.
I wonder if it has something to do with the different chemical make up of your skin...like you have the right Ph balance and she doesn't, or something? I'm obviously not a chemist or a biologist! But I wonder.

I would try anything at this point since they make me so miserable...
