I'm taking 20 hours this semester, and I'm "lazy"

Twenty credit hours is the maximum that I can take per semester, and I am taking twenty right now (and next semester as well). However, many of my fellow freshman theatre majors are taking 20, and auditing three classes. Yikes. I'm all for academic achievement, but at the same time, many of my classmates are literally studying themselves sick.

Are we so busy with classes, rehearsals and crews that we can't stop and smell the intellectual roses?

What's also very disturbing is how a coupe of my friends will get so burned out, depressed, and exhausted, that they wind up crying themselves to sleep. When I say, "you should go make an appointment with a counselor at Health Services" they reply, "I can't. I'm too busy." One friend in particular said "Well, maybe that's just a sign that God doesn't want me to be here".
I was rather angered by this comment: God was all about free will and making personal choices, and people shouldn't use religion as an excuse for everything.

I don't think that my situation is a completely uncommon one by any means. How many hours are you taking, along with your extracurriculars? How are you handling it? Are our colleges and universities producing basket cases?

I'm taking 17-- that's 5 classes. This semester it's fine because I'm taking easy, boring classes, but next semester I'm taking 2 histories, 1 political science, 1 Bible as Literature, and a PE... I'm already worried.

On top of that, I work every night (straight from school) until 10:30. So I guess with extra curriculars and everything, [including my bowling league, work, ProU, and free time], mixed with school and homework, I'm one of those "overwhelmed" people.

But I have no choice.

Why audit three classes on top of 20 hours? Sounds like they're bringing that on themselves. At my school, you don't even get credit for the classes you audit... I'm assuming you don't at yours, either.

Audited classes receive a zero credit. Also, every afternoon I spend a minimum of an hour and a half in the theatre working on the paint crew. but at least I'm getting my money's worth.

I'm taking 13 credits in classes (5 classes - senior seminar, immunology, biochem, history of the ancient world, and oral comm in the workplace), plus I do this at least 10 hours a week (even if I don't log it all), I work 10 hours a week, I volunteer 4 hours a week, I'm an active member of RHA, which probably takes 2 hours or more a week, I'm part of SAACS, which probably takes about an hour every other week, and I stupidly volunteered to run the shadowing committee for our pre-health club. Next semester I'm doing everything, but taking 15 hours (microbio + lab, conservation bio, history of Rome, and American Sign Language).

I don't think colleges and universities are creating "basket cases" out of people because I think its just people wanting to work extremely hard.

I agree.

People choose; you make your choice, then you live with it. Students who overload have to learn what they can handle and back off with what they can't.
