I was watching Channel One at the beginning of the year (for those of you who haven't heard of it, it's a news program directed at teenagers often shown in middle and high schools). They reported that 17 year olds are able to vote in the Iowa caucus. I think that's what it was. Anyway, how awesome is that? Why is it that I'm not able to vote in my state's primary?
17 year olds = too young? I don't think so. Michigan's primary was held a few weeks ago. I'm turning 18, legal voting age, in a few weeks. What do a few weeks matter? And even for the people who don't turn 18 until October or something... we should all have a say. Primaries and caucuses help determine who get their names on the ballot for the Presidential election, in which most current 17 year olds are going to be able to vote. We should be able to determine who is going to be on that ballot just as much as our parents are, I think. Honestly, I probably know more about the Candidates than my parents being in Government classes in school, and I don't think I'm alone in that. Not that all 17 year olds are better informed than their parents. Some are complete idiots. But some adults are complete idiots, too, and we're letting them vote.
We should have a say. Maybe I'll create a late bill for Michigan Youth in Government and try to get it passed when we go take over Lansing for a few days...

By the time the actual election comes around, I'm only going to be 17. It sucks, but stick it out! Just remember, you have a say sooner or later =)
I am only 17 now but in two weeks i turn 18, and because I live in Iowa I was able to participate in the Iowa Caucuses.. In Iowa, if you are going to be elligible to vote in the election this year, then we could take part in our caucuses.. Now this year I was unable to attend a caucus because i had a prior commitment to some other people and i really wasnt up for letting them down, so i missed my chance at changing history. However, do expect me to be flexing my right as an 18 year old citizen to vote in the coming election.
