Bad Luck? I think so

For some reason I seem to have bad luck in online departments. or maybe it's the companies that are not progressive, and can't accept when it is their fault. And so here is the most recent example:

I do not have a computer, so I can't apply to scholarships unless I use the school's computer, or my brothers (which I can't use often) So than I bought one online. From a company called DELL. 5 days pass, and she arrives. I set up everything, put the sterios, plug the power, and turn on the power. And as I wait, a little bar appears on the first screen. Huge letter spell DELL. And so I wait for the bar to finish loading. At about an hour later, I notice that something is wrong. 1/23 of the bar is stuck and will not finish. On top of the screen says press F2, or F12 (one of them was the setup) I try to, but nothing happens. The keyboard just lights up and says "9". I turn it off, and on and still it's stuck. So I call the company.

Apparently the warranty does not cover this. It does not cover the "program". They tell me that I could buy technical support for about $200 (2/3 of what the comp. cost me) So I say I'll think about it, and I hang up.

My question is, what is the next step? I do not think it's fair that I get a faulty computer and that I should pay an extra $200 to make it work. I can't spend any more money on it. (maybe I’ll take it to the “Nerd Squad”) Any suggestions?

yeah maybe you should take it to the nerd squad...are they aloud to do that? ...send people computers that dont work...sounds shady to me

Me too. I can't understand how they can sell these products and say , "Oh yeah, we build them, but if it doesn’t work, oh well" Is that even legal? Than charge 200 to fix it?

I have a friend who threatened to file a lawsuit for a faulty computer. It was a Dell that she bought at a store. I guess they did't want a lawsuit because the suddenly were able to fix the computer. Was this computer from a private party? I would suggest you call your credit card company and have them stop payment to the person/s who sold you a faulty computer. If you used paypal, contact the web site and tell them your situation. Maybe they can work something out.
Hope this helps.
Also try your local library and find out if you can use their computers to search for scholarships.

We bought it from the Dell website. thanks for the tips

Update: A tech friend of mine came to fix her. Now she works. I am happy that she was fixed, but still think that the price they offer to fix her is very high

I've never had trouble purchasing a computer(mine's a clunker from 10 years ago). I've worked retail, though. What's the return policy. Can you return and re-buy? And I agree with the other comment...Make a HUGE stink. If the previous bloggers idea doesn't work, a lawsuit, as for the managers name, the district managers name, post to the better business bureau (BBB), call every day. It's the squeaky wheel that gets the deal.
