The US government needs some serious introspection. i know, the bureaucracy is already crazy, BUT- FEMA spend over 500 million dollars on trailers after huricane Katrina, and of the nearly 11,000 units purchased, less than 1000 are occupied. They are sitting empty- Mostly in Arkansas, and will most likely have to be destroyed- theyre sinking into the ground. Meanwhile they (and by they i mean taxpayers) are paying 25,000 dollars a month for storage AND are still paying for evacuees to stay in hotels AND there are still people without homes in New Orleans. FEMA claims theyve had difficulty getting around rules that prohibit putting trailers on flood plains- in that case, I have one question- Why the hell did they purchase trailers in the first place if they knew they wouldnt be able to put them where the need is/was? Its not exactly a secret that the gulf coast is a flood plain.... or ask congress for emergency, case specific legislation that would allow these particular trailers to be put on flood plains... Proactive government, what a thought eh?
FEMA Screwup

FEMA was just a big mess in the first place if you ask me. In attempting to do a "good" deed they've only ended up failing miserably. They are/will be their own downfall. It is only a matter of time...

I agree, they should have made sure that they had a family for every house. Now the houses will have to be deystoyed because they weren't set on the proper spot. Its stupid. Maybe they could give the houses to the homless or something.
dont they screw up far to often
FEMA is an idiotic construct to begin with. Jimmy Carter developed it in the 1970's and it remained a feckless functionary fiasco straight through Katrina. Disaster management should be left up to the first responders at the state & local gov't levels. I agree with the Snowe-Lieberman proposal to disban the agency all together. Check out my blog. You'll enjoy it.
