Eating Disorder or Laziness?

LostinTheUnknown's picture

I've read a few blogs that were talking about how these people saw themselves as having an eating disorder because they were fat. Well, I would have to completely disagree with anyone who says that over eating is an eating disorder. Why? Because when your overweight it's from over eating, and lack of exercise, and being lazy enough to sit on their butt and complain about thier weight... not doing anything to take care of losing the weight.

And if you do call it a disorder you need to realize that the disorder is not in the eating, it's in the lack of self control.

Don't get me wrong or anything, I've been overweight for most of my life, and am just now starting to really lose the pounds... but I struggled with a real eating disorder, Bulimia. And so I know how it feels to have one. Now yes I do realize that there are several different forms of eating disorders (Bulimia, Anorexia... ect) But being fat is not one of them.

My mom always taught me that "Until the pain of staying the same is greater than the pain of change nothing will happen."

So, sorry to anyone who is overweight, but in my opinion you don't have an eating disorder.

I think in some cases it can be considered a disorder.

My mother for example is overweight and for years tried to go on different diets and exercised but couldn't lose weight. It's not over eating that's the problem always, it's mostly of what in the food you eat that's the problem.

Now, there is binge eating that can be considered a problem. But, sometimes that's because of emotional issues like stress or depression.

There are some diseases that actually cause obesity, even if you eat right and exercise...

I have been bulimic and anorexic and overeating is by far the scariest....Because I am not fat or oevrweight and I do it and can't stop. It is spurred on by insecurities and underlying problems like RAPE and being abused and beaten and feeling like no one cares...It doesn't develop overnight...and it hurts...And you do it because food is a constant, a solace. The only thing that can't degrade you without your permission. I run 7.5 miles, bellydance, jump rope, do various exercise videos...so don't tell me I am lazy...

LostinTheUnknown's picture

And you get out and excersize... do you not? So I was in no way calling you lazy.

UNfortunately, I'm going to have to disagree ith this post. Sure, everyone who is overweight or obese or fat does not have an eating disorder.....but some of them do. Not everyone that is underweight or skinny or thin is bulimic or anorexic. To say that folks are just lazy and don't get off their ass is pretty judgemental, right off the bat. You yourself said you were overweight, so it assumes that you're admitting to your own laziness and lack of self control. For some others, it's a lot more serious.

I'm glad you're losing weight but hope you're becoming more healthy as well. Sometimes it's not just about the numbers.

Exactly what I said...

Being overweight is an eating disorder. The overweight person eats until their stomach tells them that they've had too much, not their minds. Usually, people know when they've eaten too much so they stop. It may be that Overweight people don't have that instinctive thought that it's time to stop.

There's actually a disorder where the stomach doesn't have that "I'm full" mechanism and a person can literally eat to the point that they can't put anything more in because it's coming out of their mouth and they don't feel full.

Redundant, sorry.

Amy Rice's picture

Causes a milder, but present form of this...I know, I can eat for hours and not feel full. I, often, after a binge like that will need to sleep for hours because my blood pressure and sugar levels will be thru the roof...It's very scary.

i disagree with you because alot of people who are overweight develop a disorder. their self esteem plummets and they develop anorexia, binge eating, bulemia and other things. Depression is a real thing and it causes a spiral of emotions. So no, being overweight doesnt mean ur lazy, it could mean they are depressed, or built fat, or a million other things. the only thing that you can say about a heavy person for sure it that they are heavy because not all fat people are lazy, and not all fat people are unhealthy.

I understand where you're coming from. You also have to take other people's situation into consideration as well though. I've been trying to force my sister to jog outside with me. But she always refused because she probably feels ashame. I know she might be lazy because working out takes a lot of energy...but she has emotional conflicts within herself. And she's trying to overcome that. Until that day comes, I will keep on encouraging her to run outside with me. One day for sure she'll come with me, I have no doubt about it. Yes, many of them might actually be lazy, however they just need someone to help support them physically and emotionally. Just a thought.

the people who complain about being fat, don't excersize, and and than go over and call it an eating disorder... to make themselves feel better.

Yes, I understand that some people hav a hard time not running to food for comfort, but in proportion... it can be done.

I'm sorry but in our day and age we give everyone excuses to be the way thay are in everything they do.

"I watch Porn" - "It's ok, it's normal" NO IT'S NOT!
"I killed my mom yesterday" - "It's Ok, shes had a hard life" So it's ok to kill?
"She's doing drugs" - "It's not right but she does it because (Fill in the blank) so we'll leave it alone.

Uh....... See the problem?

Like almost everyone else I'm going to have to disagree. Dissect the phrase "eating disorder." Princeton's wordnet defines it as :a disorder of the normal eating routine. Overeating is a disruption or disorder of a normal eating routine.

Also, I have to wonder, did you just equate looking at pornography to matricide??? Can you clarify that for me?

IT'S NOT NORMAL TO WATCH PORN?!

Damn, I am totally screwed. What do I do now???

Me, too...Porn has been a mainstay for man since day one...It may have changed (look at those ankles!), but it's been there.

Doesn't make it right.

Explain to me what makes it wrong, please. Then I will dissect your argument and prove that there's absolutely nothing wrong with it.

pornograghy violates God authority and holiness no matter if you belive him or not.
1st Corithinians 6:18 saids that sexual immorality is not meant for the body pornography is SIN not a disease.

You've paraphrased. Please provide me with more than your paraphasing of the verse.

Not only is it perverted, but one thing leads to another, and usually once someone starts they have a hard time stopping.... that's why it called being 'Addicted' to porn.

Ah nicholas you were always intelllegent, well i want you to actuallly get a bible and look the scripture i gave you to find out the truth for yourself if your not afriad of the that pierces your soul.

ps God says your about twenty years old and you live in tampa florida you live in a house that is yellow mix with white and has about two to three cars in the drive way.

Close, no cigar.

I have no bible. Sorry. I'm 17, so almost 20 would be about right. I live in Kentucky, like my bio says, in a rather large 2 story house (it's red) and I have 4 cars in the driveway. Good guess, though.

Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body.

This is telling me that pornography is a sin? Not quite. That is the KJV. The NKJV says:

"Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body."

Ok, I'll give you some merit to your argument. God feels that sex is a sin...(I wonder what Adam and Eve thought of this when they had sex to continue mankind?). Why does God feel that sex is a sin? Because the "holy spirit" is in you. Ok, I got it.

But this passage deals with sins against the body and sins outside the body. God feels that if you do something sexually devient, you have sinned not only against God, but against yourself. Now, a sin outside the body would be your general 7.

But, does this damn pornography? Not really. No where in the bible does it mention the inability to view sex, nudity, etc. The bible even promotes nudity in Genesis. This passage damns whoredom and harlots, not pornography.

Good try, though.

Actually, it says fornication, which is sex with a person you're not married to.

If you're married to the person, sex is fine. That whole procreation bit and all.

-- quis custodiet ipsos custodes?

I used two different versions of the bible, one with the word fornication, the other without. Either way, but the KJV and NKJV have the same meaning: don't be a slut.

I totally agree with you because being fat is a choice. I uderstand that some people have a hard time losing weight because of certain medical conditions but if you choose a triple cheese burger over a nice low cal low carb salad than you are making th decision to stay where you are. Because if you hve the ability to get up and off the couch and change your diet and you dont, you are making the decision to stay fat. Because even chaning your diet to a more healthy lower carb and lower calorie diet will cause you to loose weight.

People larging and supersizing their meals and getting diet pop....Just go all out, you aren't fooling anyone.

The only thing I go to McDonald's for is the french fries. I don't know why, but I do. I prefer Taco Bell...I like the hot sauce.

if You call yourself fat, complain about it, and do nothing against it...... LAZY. But if You try.... good job.

LostinTheUnknown's picture

And that's all I was trying to say, so Thank You.

I love this comment and I have to agree. Being fat or obese because of over eating is NOT a disorder. Yes, some people are depressed and find solace in binges. Binges are okay I am a woman I know we need them every once a while. The solution is to eat only some of the chips in bag instead of the whole bag, or having one piece of cake instead of the whole thing. The problem needs to be recognised that you are fat because you need to move; you need to exercise; you need to take charge of your obsession before it is too late. Weight loss is inevitable even in slow progressions. Take a walk, or go up one flight of stairs to lose weight. I have heard excuses from friends that they have bad knees so they can't run, but don't try to walk short distances. A disorder is anything not normal. Well I say it is not an eating disorder, but a lifestyle disorder.

Lack of Self Control....... aka LifeStyle Disorder... not ED.

I've watched porn, and do every once in a while.....but it hasn't led me to become addicted or need it.

I am going to step out of the box & agree with you!
I cannot stand people who complain about something in their life [like being overweight for instance] but refuse to take the necessary steps to fix themselves.
Laziness is NOT a disease.
Children obescity is a huge issue today because they sit around & eat all day. Get up, Step away from the tv & Go outside! Thank you!
