The Impossibility of a Tolerant World

Tolerance is the big thing now. Tolerate everything! Tolerate this religion! Tolerate that religion! Tolerate my worldview! Tolerate your worldview! People want tolerance out of the world. But will they get it?

In the words of John Wayne, "That'll be the day."

Honestly, I can understand the motives behind most tolerance calls, and they are very commendable. For instance, why can't we just tolerate each other and end all wars? I mean,we're evolving aren't we? So we should be getting to that point where we can lay down our guns and stop fighting, right? To put it bluntly, tolerance in this world is as impossible as Marx's classless society. There will always be someone who won't tolerate someone else. Ironically,it's usually the person calling for tolerance.

But I'm jumping ahead of myself!

Let's define tolerance. To be tolerant with someone often means that you don't agree with them, but you'll tolerate them. In other words, you may disagree, but it's not like you're going to,i dunno, kill the person. In America, we deal with tolerance somewhat well. Okay,so why can't we spread this to the rest of the world?...

Because most people who cry for tolerance often deny absolute truth and push for religious pluralism. This is what makes tolerance so impossible. Most religions don't mix well with each other. And if there's no absolute truth, how can we know what tolerance is? Isn't that pushing your morals on someone else? For shame! But now I'm mixing topics...sorry.

Okay,to bring this together, the world will never be tolerant because we will never open ourselves up to live with each other's disagreements. This especially goes for the tolerant-pushers. Why? Because they just can't tolerate one certain religion...can't you guess it? It's Christianity. If a Christian tries to speak up in public,his/her voice is drowned out by the "tolerant people" angry at the poor Christian for claiming truth. Now that just isn't tolerant is it? And this leads to a startling deeper truth which I'll discuss in my next blog post coming soon: "We are afraid of the God we don't believe in..."

You're right about the tolerance thing. However, about the Christians getting drowned out; that's just post-modern liberalists drowning the "poor Christian" out in American society. Unfortunately, in places like Iraq, for example, others are being drowned out. Shiite Muslims are drowning out the Suni Muslims. The Pakistani's are being drowned out by the Israelis. The Jews, Gypsys, homosexuals and many others were drowned out by the Nazi's, etc. You get my point.

I know what you're saying. People always claim for tolerance but in reality not everyone can be tolerant of others -- true tolerance can only happen in a perfect world. But I feel that if we just accept the fact that we can't change how "to put it bluntly, tolerance in this world is...impossible," then no one would tolerate anyone at all. Because there is an ideal of a "world with complete tolerance," where everyone is tolerated and agree to disagree, that is what makes people demand tolerance and respect in the first place. That ideal motivates us, the people, to make that ideal happen and make us strive to become a better people so that someday, even though it seems and really is impossible, we may come close to achieving something like that.

And another note on the Christian thing -- I know where you're coming from. I feel that in the United States, Christians and Roman Catholics are seriously not as highly tolerated as other religions. If a person was Jewish or Buddhist, no one would criticize you as harshly but if you were a Christian -- more people would be on you, saying "if God this" and "if God that". But then again, in most instances, the said Christian or Roman Catholic most of the time preaches and forces ideas on others instead of agreeing to disagree, and vise versa with the person...but not all Roman Catholics or Christians are like that and I feel that it is a general misconception that is too many times used when someone disagrees with a Christian or Catholic. Anyway, I'll look out for your next blog!
