"Tuned In" to the Supernatural

This is not something I’ve talked much about with anyone, but here it goes!

I believe in things that are unexplainable. I believe in the supernatural. Growing up, I never really thought there was anything too unusual about my family, other than the fact that we were a group of seven in a community of small families. My parents had “normal” jobs, us kids had “normal” interests. However, it wasn’t too long before I began to realize that our ability to “tune in” to the supernatural was a bit odd.

Some people call it a gift. Some people call it a curse. I call it weird, sometime awesome, and usually pretty freaky. My whole family believes in… spirits, I guess you could call it. Angels, ghosts, demons, whatever it happens to be. These are difficult things for many people to believe in, because we always want proof. It’s hard to believe in something we can’t see, hear, or feel. Perhaps that’s why my family does believe in spirits – because, between the seven of us, we can see, hear, feel, or sense them.

My dad is the least “tuned in.” Only once has he heard the smooth rock music that comes from a corner of the house when the building is quiet. Then there’s my brother, who has heard the music just a bit more than my dad. My mom and one younger sister have both witnessed many sounds in the house, convincing them that the building may be haunted... even though it’s only about 15-years-old.

Then there’s me. I’ve never actually seen a spirit, but I have heard and felt them. I’ve heard them playing the piano, rummaging through a closet shelf, and, of course, playing the smooth rock music. Perhaps my most dramatic interaction with a spirit (I call it an angel) was when I was a child of about nine-years-old. I was climbing around the construction site of my family’s new house. I was playing on a huge mound of dirt above the newly dug basement. Suddenly, I lost my footing and started to fall. I was sure that was it for me. However, I felt someone or something push me back up to my feet. I was very shaken up, and that was the very moment I started believing in angels. There is no other explanation for why I didn’t fall into the hole.

Another very unexplainable thing that has happened to me was when I was at my parent’s house alone. The dog was outside and wasn’t very happy about it. She was barking and whining, and I was just finishing an email and then was going to let her in. A few minutes later, the dog was happily inside – only I hadn’t moved, there was nobody else at home, and the door was still shut. Now, I believe the dog is smart, but not smart enough (or big enough) to open and close a door.

My older sister has seen an angel twice (the same one both times), and things she considers “dark spirits” or demons numerous times in various locations, including in a church. Once when she saw the angel was when she was about 15-years-old and was driving with my mom to go sign a contract for a modeling agency she had just been accepted to. The angel appeared in the backseat of the car and said two words: “don’t go.” My mom didn’t see it. They didn’t go.

My youngest sister (she’s 18 now) is by far the most “tuned in.” When she was little, she would freak out, acting like she saw something that scared her. However, she wasn’t old enough yet to explain it. As she grew older, she was able to explain more easily. She refused to go into the basement of my parent’s house when she was little, and still refuses today. It’s not because there’s anything strange in the basement – it’s because there’s some sort of dark spirit that “chills on the staircase,” as she puts it. She says it never comes up and never goes down. It just stays on the steps. There is another room in the house she doesn’t like to go because of another ghost that “lives” in the corner of the room. It stays in the corner, she says, but the way it looks at her scares her. She claims she can see spirits or demons around people, too, which explains why she seemingly irrationally disliked some people when she was young.

Another weird thing… my mother and I both have a difficult time with watches. She has finally found one that worked for her, and the same with me. However, growing up, I could never wear watches because they always stopped working. I would wear one for a few days, and it would quit. I would try a different one, and it would quit. My mother had the same problem. I gave up wearing watches for years, before I finally found one that lasted. I don’t know if it’s something about the watch, or if something about me changed. It’s completely bizarre.

Several of my family members (including me) have also had prophetic dreams on several occasions. I’ve been told that I could possibly “develop my abilities” to become even more in-tune to dreams, spirits, and the supernatural. However, I find all this stuff a bit scary, and I don’t think I want to bring more upon myself.

So those are some stories about why I believe in the supernatural. I don’t know why my family is the way it is, and it’s not something we usually talk about. We're perfectly normal (whatever "normal" is) people who have been successful in schools and careers. Our supernatural encounters could be seen as weird, but I suppose it could be special, too.

That's some pretty amazing stuff. I don't think it's freaky, but rather I'm quite intrigued. I don't think you should try to develop your abilities or anything, but man, that's pretty cool.

Have you and your family come up with an explanation about what all this means? What does it mean for the rest of us that aren't "tuned in"?

I've read a bunch of books about this sort of thing, trying to figure out why this stuff happens to me and my family, but not other people. I've come up with no answers, because there's so many conflicting ideas out there.

Some people believe that experiencing these things is a choice, and everyone can choose to witness supernatural things if they want to. Other people believe that it's an ability that some people have and others don't - kind of like how some people are naturally more athletic than others.

As for me, I really have no clue what it means. I don't think it means we're better or more evolved than anyone else. I don't think it's anything to envy, either. I think the idea of a childhood and life free of freaky noises, strange shadows, predictive dreams, and other unexplained events sounds pretty nice! At the same time, I don't think I would trade in my "connection" with the supernatural... if for no other reason than that I never have to be someone who wonders if supernatural stuff is true.

now I don't have to worry about whether or not it is true because I fully believe your story.

It's nice to know you believe me. After all, I don't have any reason to make any of that stuff up.

Your watch issue reminds me of my problem with motion sensors. They WILL NOT recognize me as a sentient being. Doors, faucets, hand dryers..none of them work for me. I'm no wispy little thing, either. I'm a freaking giant!

That's interesting!! I wonder what's going on with people like us...

That's gotta be a bit frustrating with how automatic everything is becoming these days!

I'm often seen beating up a faucet in the women's room at school. I'm not one to leave without washing my hands, so I will curse at the faucet until it works. What usually happens is some bemused bystander says, "Here, let me try," it turns on for them, and I can wash my hands.

I've always chalked mine up to electrical imbalances, somehow related to epilepsy, which I am sure gives me some kind of supernatural power I just haven't harnessed yet. I have no basis for any of those claims, but that is my personal mythology.

I have seen a spirit before - I rubbed my eyes, shook my head, pinched myself, smacked my head - no matter what I did, he was still there. I also have prophetic dreams. The most interesting thing I can do is always tell right away when a woman is pregnant. I knew my roommate was pregnant at about a week. She didn't believe me until like 3 weeks later when she finally took a test. I just get a feeling when a pregnant woman walks by me and I just know.

I never had an issue with watches, but elevators usually open for me when I approach them. I rarely have to push the button.

I wonder if some people just have some kind of extra chemical or something that just reacts to the tides and magnetism of the earth is a way that makes certain electronics to function differently? Or maybe it just has something to do with the amount of energy omitted? Healing Touch and massage is usually something that only certain people can effectively do, so maybe their energy is different than others'?

I honestly have no idea why some have certain "abilities" and others do not. I almost wonder if it has something to do with brain waves. Since humans only really use 10% of their brain, maybe some people are just able to use a different 10% than another person? Or maybe you use 10.0001% and not just 10% and those who can use telekinesis or other abilities use 11%?

It's fascinating, isn't it?

I've had a couple healing touch sessions before and I was impressed. I hadn't thought of it as an extra ability, but your percentage explanation makes a lot of sense.

It is indeed very interesting.

My brother was in a really bad motorcycle accident in October. He had 100% brain damage and the doctors didn't think he would live past two day. He hung in there, in a coma for 3 months. During those 3 months a nurse and I used healing touch on him and I massaged him everyday - sometimes up to 5 times a day. Although he is almost completely blind now, he is up and walking around and talking. His neurosurgeon is amazed by this. His CT scan shows that most of the brain damage is healing itself.

I am not sure if it was the healing touch and massage or the constant prayer that has him alive today, but I like to think that it played a HUGE part in his recovery.

It was the nurse that taught me how to do the Healing Touch, I had never studied it before or anything, but when it came to saving my brother's life I was willing to try anything.

Wow! Thanks for sharing.

That is an interesting theory. I wouldn't be surprised if it was something like that... I wonder what kind of studies have been done about these topics. I've read books about theories and experiences, but haven't read anything about any sort of scientific study.

I honestly don't know if there have been any studies done....I'll do some research and find out, though.

What would be really cool is if there were some sort of way to unlock a portion of the other 90% of your brain. I wonder what percentage of the brain was used in the first humans? Maybe through evolution more and more of the brain is being used.....

An unusual blog, but I like it.

You're not the only one to experience inexplicable things or have strange dreams. I remember when I was younger, probably around 10 years old, I was driving my go cart really fast around the yard. I lost control (i think the gas pedal was stuck down) and I was headed straight for the pear tree and clearly a very hard stop if I didn't change my course, but I didn't have enough time to think of turning the wheel. Suddenly the front end of the go cart hits a small bump, and the front bounces into the air unnaturally high. When the front comes back down, I'm at a right angle to wear I was before and able to stop the cart. I might not be anything special, but at the time it felt like there was something unusual about it all.
