When it comes to Black Universities, people automatically assume that you must be black to attend. If your not black and you plan on attending, the first question people ask is "why a black school?" I hate it! I am an African American but I don't attend a black university because I feel that they're looked down upon by EVERYONE! Sure you'll get a good education on African American history, but to a certain extent I feel like the education may get pushed a little too far. I would hate to be in class listening to a lecture on how much "the white man" let "my people" down way back when. Racial discrimination and racism is supposed to ne over right?
On one of many plus sides, black universities have a wonderful way of interacting their students with each other and the community through school involvement groups, clubs, sororities and fraternaties, musical involvments, etc. I think other universities should definitely grasp this concept. Aside of students attending college to get an education, the experience should also be a fun way to meet new friends that will carry on to and through their future. Black Universities take more pride in the involvement of each other. The students come together to make their own organizations and clubs that are probably more interesting to the student life and more up to date on the styles of today. Student life should, in a way, be left to the students and not staff. After all, the students of today are what make tomorrow. In other universities, there are organizations and clubs that are run by the students, but the "love-bond" just isn't the same.

There is so much to explore in life. Don't be-little your dreams or the areas in which you travel. Go beyond your own expectations and expand your own horizons.
I think that with every thing the black community has suffered through, they automatically have more of a connection with each other... because for a really long time, they only had each other. That really has translated into a sense of "exclusivity" within black society when other ethnicities are concerned. It is true that black universities have a real grasp on the concept of togetherness and the importance of students interacting with their community, but the white community in general has not had the history of *needing* that bond with each other to survive... so it doesn't seem like as big of a priority.
I think black universities are ridiculous. I am half black, but I do not necessarially look it. Sure I am tan, but a lot of times people think I am half mexican, or some sort of islander. My mother is white, and I live with her and my white stepfather. I do not know my real dad, he is where I inherited my coloring from. Needless to say, I do not know very many african american people. My school is a predominately white school in a predominately white area. I would not call myself a racist, but I think that affirmative action and pandering to the "black" culture is dumb. I hate to say it, but sometimes I do not even want to associate myself with the black culture altogether because 9/10 black persons I have met outside of my town fall into the sterotype. "Hey girl! Can I git yo digits?" Its not a stereotype its the truth! I wouldnt go to a "black university" if they gave me a full-ride.
First of all not every black person is like that if you got to know them! I go to an all white school myself and I wouldnt go to an all white college if they paid me!! I am half black and half mexican. You need to learn more about your culture baby girl, learn about what our people have been through and how many of us are struggling today!! Black colleges can help you learn more about the other half of your culture! I'm not trying to say affirmative action is a good thing, but it does give the struggling blacks who actually want to do something with their lives a chance.
I didnt say that all blacks were like that. I said a majority. And I do know about "my culture" etc...but I feel like a lot of blacks use the past as an excuse for the problems of the present that have nothing to do with slavery etc...
I appreciate your honesty miss debatechick, but i feel that your thinking is a bit ridiculous all on its on, wouldn't you say. I mean your basically saying that you're racist against your own kind even though you don't claim that half of your culture. People who think the way you do prove how ignorant people really are. Black universities are completely necessary seeing how there are so many people who believe that blacks aren't intelligent and don't deserve the same positions and oportunities that the whites do.
You say that many people mistake you for being half mexican. Do you think that being mexican is better than being black? To be honest we are all in the same boat, us coloreds. We are the ones who truly have to work and go through all the struggles in order to survive. I'm not saying that white people don't have to work hard, I'm simply saying that in this world that we live in, coloreds have to work that much harder in anything and everything. If you truly understood how the system worked I don't think that you would have the same opinions that you do now. In my neighborhood, when I was younger, there were parks with basketball courts available to all at all times. There were hoops at the schools, the parks, and in the appartments. Now there's hardly any basketball courts. They've taken the hoops down at almost all the schools, the parks, and the appartments. Why do you think that is? Oh no, it's not because the people around here are heathens or anything; it's because of the simple fact that they're scared. Our society is rigged for only the whites to survive, and if you ask me, it's all a bunch of bull! They see that we have taken the game of basketball and are starting to take control of our successes and our lives, and they don't like it. I mean all the great black leaders were killed off by our corrupt government, they even killed off the Kennedy family. They hate to see us uprise and take control, and by they I mean the whites. If you were to associate yourself amoungst the black culture you would realize all the hard struggles that we have to go through on a day-to-day basis.
Saying this is not for me to feel better about myself, it's to inlighten those who have been kept in the dark from the REAL WORLD. You might read this and come to not dislike the blacks, then again you might not, heck you might not read this at all. But if you do read this, read it more than once. I won't you to understand what's really going on. Understand how our life isn't just fun and games, it's a STRUGGLE!
I think it is very ignorant of you to believe that all black people are like that. You may believe your upbringing has benefited you greatly, but obviously it has not because your views towards the Black community are ignorant and baseless. Are you that enclosed in your white culture that you have not seen the plethora of educated and classy Black men and women in this world? You speak as if the Black community is dirt! You wouldn't even exist if it wasn't for a Black man! Get out of your shell and explore the world instead of being obnoxiously close minded!
