The Largest Republic of Them All

A large republic is a threat to liberty.  There is no way one government could satisfy, let alone protect every individual right of their people, when the people are so diverse.  When a republic becomes too big, it can no longer focus on the smallest detail, it is always forced to deal with the larger issues, because anything else would be a waste of time.  Focusing on the small problems would only help a small number of people and so when the attention is always on the larger picture, flaws appear and grow without anyone noticing or wanting to fix it.

A republic that spreads across different types of landforms means different types of people that believe and need special treatments.  There is no way the government can take care of the needs of the people from the East Coast, the Midwest, and the West Coast.  They are all uniquely different.  And even if the government does figure out a method of considering each person’s needs, they still can not please their wants.  And when citizens’ wants are not taken care of, that is more apparent to them and can cause a lot of distrust of how effective the government is.  But a large republic could never make everyone happy.  One person’s beliefs would upset another.

With a large republic, morals and priorities become distorted.  Right now, people and the government are more enthralled with the current power struggle that they created between political parties.  The only current goal of the Republicans and the Democrats is to make sure the other does not get anything accomplished.  If one party is for a certain policy, the other will go against that policy and nothing will get done, or worse the wrong decision will pass only because of the arguing parties.  The parties fight each other on methods and issues, when they should be the ones coming together and deciding what is right for the American people, not what is best for the party.  They are so overwhelmed with the mission to make sure the other one fails, that the needs of the people go unnoticed.  It has become the will of the political parties, not of the people.

The vastness of the republic creates corruption of the officials.  They become so detached from the regular citizens, that people become convinced there is nothing you personally can do to help change the system.  The large government that is needed to control the large republic is so complicated, one can feel left out.  And now that many feel that way, they act in that way also.  The attitude that continuously grows is, even if I do care about what is going on in our government and I still do not have a say, or that it still does what it wants even when there are people against those issues, then why bother.  The government still continues with or without your support, so Americans feel no need or desire to actively participate in it.

Only a small, personal government can only come close to identifying with its people.  Not a large empire to which you are only a number.  With vastness comes impersonality where abuses thrive and go undetected.  But a government that knows its people can only come with a smaller size.
