Just the other day, I was making a joke about how Fidel Castro, the person that essentially the entire US has wanted gone for the longest time, seemed to just keep going no matter what. In fact, I believe I compared him to the Energizer Bunny. During the time he has been in rule, the US has seen 10 presidents in office.
And now I look at the newspaper, and he's officially retired.
It just doesn't seem real...Fidel Castro is now completely done. Sure, he hasn't actually been in rule since his illness (a stomach illness, wasn't it?) in July, 2006. His brother, Raul Castro, took over. But still...Fidel was a symbol, a figurehead.
Finally, this figurehead is no more.
Cuba is ready for change; it has illustrated this very clearly. Raul Castro appeared to be on the right path with some of his past attempts. Also, if some of the prospects are true, the younger Castro may not even have the desire to hold onto this position. If Raul indeed decides to vacate the position and leave it open for a truly open election, that could signal promising change. It could lead to an idealist Cuban President, set on reshaping Cuba into a prosperous, successful nation. I may only pray for the best.
However, when I look at this, I also wonder; will I be able to look back and say "I remember the day Fidel Castro's reign came to an end"? Will I tell my children, who are learning about Fidel Castro in their history class, about how I remember the end of his rule and how I wrote a blog about it?
Who knows? If I do, maybe I'll be able to link them to it.
