Knit for Peace

So I really like to knit. I think a lot of people are starting to learn to knit these days. There are a lot of cool organizations out there that you can donate the things you knit to. Knit for Kids, Afghans for Afghans, and Warm Woolies are three such organizations. Knit for Kids has a particular pattern for sizes 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 sweaters for kids. The pattern is simple and quick to make and calls for a simple acrylic yarn that you can buy at the store for like $1.99. You can make it as simple or complex as you want! They distribute these sweaters mostly to children throughout the U.S. but sometimes they send them to other places around the world. Afghans for Afghans is a humanitarian organization that takes hand-knit blankets and crocheted blankets and sweaters, vests, hats, mittens, and socks and sends them to the "beleaguered people of Afghanistan". This is a really great organization because it allows people on one side of a conflict to help those on the other side peacefully. It's a great opportunity for an American to prove that we're not just a militaristic nation, but that we care about those suffering in other nations; it's a great opportunity to say "I'm not my government; I love you even though the actions of my nation my speak otherwise because you are a real person too who deserves to live as you chose". Warm Woolies takes wool hand-knit and crocheted children's clothing and sends them to orphanages in Mongolia, Russia, China, Kazakhstan, and Rosebud and Pine Ridge Tribal Reservations in South Dakota. I have some great bright green yarn that I want to use to make something for this organization; imagine being an orphan in one of these places who doesn't even have warm clothes and getting something hand made with love in your favorite color. When I was younger, I know I would have loved anything lime green, and I'm sure these kids would feel the same. So if you knit, or if you learn how, these are some great places to send your knit items! It's so much fun to knit for them and it's great to know you're making a difference in the life of someone far away.

I tried to knit once. It took my forever and I ended up with a pretty neat bookmark! But then I realized a chunky bookmark made of yarn was the most annoying thing to have in a book.

I admire anyone with the ability to knit! Especially those who can knit well enough to donate it!
