Global Warming is something that currently affects our world and is a topic that is constantly the head of discussion. But do people really know what Global Warming is all about and if so, do they know how to prevent it from becoming worse.
Global Warming refers to the increase of the average temperature of the Earth's atmosphere; refering to both air and oceans. Global Warming is said to be linked to or caused by human activity that helps to increase the levels of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere. Deforestation and transportation fuel [which help to count for a third of the greenhouse pollution in the U.S. alone] are the main causes of such emissions of greenhouse gases.
The results of Global Warming are obviously a temperature increase, but we must look to the future of such an issue and see all that could possibly happen. A world wide sea level rise could possibly occur causing either flooding or a drought. Extreme weather conditions could lead to the extinction of various animals and changes in agricultural yields could leave a shortage of food across the world.
I know a lot of people are wondering what a bunch of facts has to with them, but being educated about the subject is the first step; it makes the issue so much more personal.
There a certaintly little things one could do to help fight Global Warming:
1. Don't Use Hot Water When Cold Will Do [This works while washing your clothes; no one is asking you to take a cold shower...]
2. Buy "recycled" items
3. Turn on the ceiling fan versus using the air conditoner.
4. Buy in bulk.
5. Do some strategic landscaping in your home...like planting a tree where the sun hits your home most directly...
6. Use power-strips [Leaving cell phone charges and Ipod charges plugged into the wall suck down energy; instead of being bugged by plugging them in and out of the socket, buy a power strip with an on/off switch...a power strip turned off uses zero juice.]
7. Find better light bulbs. [Try using compact fluorescent light bulbs...]
8. Buy applicances that have the Energy Star.
9. Get Active. [Let your House Reps. and Congress members know that you support federal action in reducing greenhouse gas emission...Many greenhouse lobbyists have petitions and letters already pre-written on their websites; its as easy as copying and pasting into an email or printing and sending off to your Represenatives or Congress member. ]
I hope this blog gets you a little more aware and concious....especially of your consumption. =]
