Bill Clinton began his first term as president in January of ’93. During the campaign, Clinton used the slogan “It’s the economy, stupid!” to suggest that he could address the nation’s economic issues. Clinton tried to follow a middle course when it came to the Economy. He wanted to end the lingering recession by raising spending or cutting taxes. When Clinton took office over 37 million Americans had no health insurance. The numbers kept rising along with the cost of healthcare. “The healthcare system of ours is badly broken, and it’s time to fix it,” Clinton said to a national TV audience in Sep’93. 1996-Bill Clinton is reelected president with49% popular vote and 379 electoral votes.
1996-Whitewater affair.
Clinton was accused of having taken part in fraudulent loans and land deals with Arkansas years earlier and having used his influence as then-governor to block an investigation of his business partners. No evidence was found to link Clinton to any wrong-doings.
1998-The government had achieved its first budget surplus since 1969.
