TAG!... Your BANNED?!?!?!?

A Mass. grade school has banned Tag and all other unsupervised 'chase' games because they are afraid they are going to get sued because the kid got hurt. Now i'm not sure about you but I think that's just dumb. We've been playing unsupervised games like tag for years, we all did it when we were little. The next generation is trying to now and suddenly were going to tell them "no"? When we got hurt we just nursed our bruises, got up and got back in the game. The kids are going to play anyway, whether you ban them or not is my opinion. Most of them grew up with the game around them, and there little, they live for fun. I say let them have their fun.

Wow, that's ridiculous. Why not tear down the playgrounds too? I mean, afterall, who hasn't fallen off of a swing or playset in their life?

Some people are just too over-protective and cautious sometimes.

Besides, kids need exercise. If they can't run around, what do you expect them to do?

I think we have to blame whoever it was who decided suing is the way of life. Oops, I spilled my coffee. Sue McDonald's. Oops, my daughter was sexually assaulted by a virtual stranger she was dumb enough to want to meet in person. Sue Myspace. Oops, my GPA is going down. Sue ProgressiveU.

I think taking away and telling kids what they can and cannot play isnt right. kids should be kids, and just like you said we played those games when we were younger and we turned out all right. I think its rediculous how much people sue and the things they sue for. I dont think our legal system was established ever imagining some of the things people take to court these days.

That is insane. Tag was a favorite when we were kids. You know society has become too sue happy when simple no equipment needed games are being banned in schools out of fear the school will be sued. A broken bone, cut, scrap, bruise, fall, etc was just that a few years ago... now it's reason to sue?! What a load of crap.

Things like this *are* utterly ridiculous, but indicative of the continuing trend to coddle children nowadays... Adults of the current "in-charge" generation seem to think children are incapable of doing anything while not under constant supervision. But kids can make decisions for themselves, form opinions which are valid, handle responsibility *and* competition, and if they fall down and get hurt on the playground- hell, even if they break a bone! - That's part of growing up. You learn to take the knocks when they come, heal up and get on with it!

::sighs:: Yet another reason why my kids will have *real* chores on our farm!

This is ridiculous, but working in a preschool I can see why schools feel the need to have rules like this. Tag is a great game to get kids moving. It's fun and it's good exercise, but kids can get hurt.

I've had kids come crying to me "he pushed me!" only to find out they were playing tag and got tagged a little harder then they wanted to be. Also there isn't a lot of open space to play at the preschool where I work (we have a fenced in outside play area with play houses, slides, tables, etc.), so playing tag and running/chasing games creates a concern that somebody's going to crash into someone, or something, and kids will get hurt.

I personally don't think tag should be banned though, but it could be limited to a certain area, so kids who don't want to play don't get caught in the middle of things. A couple of brushburns aren't going to kill elementry school kids, and with all the concerns about over-weight kids, a little more running would do them good.
