we make our children fat

theres this huge issue of obesity in america...and people sit there and they blame the fast food companies, and the blame the soda companies, the schools, blahity blah blah.

its bullshit. what kids eat for lunch does not make them 405lbs. (obviously im exzaggerating) but honestly, if you have a burger and a soda everyday at lunch, sure it might add on a few pounds...but its not going to make you "obese"(sp)

its the parents fault. i look at it this way; in my house its usually always healthy food. wheat bread, diet coke and juice, nothing extremly fatting we dont have all those re-heat junk foods that i love, we have fruit cups and jello, which i also have come to love. but thats why im not fat. look at the kids who are overweight, look at their parents, they're usually overweight, sometimes they're not, but alot of times they are...and look in the cupboards. its fattening food.

anoher factor; i should say now that this is not my idea, my dad told me and he saw it on tv on some talk show or something... think about when your a kid. you hate vegetables right? what do your parents say? ..."finish your plate or  you cant play video games" and you say "but mom im not hungry" and she says that she doesnt care. shes forcing you to eat. so we learn to eat when were not hungry.

its not the fast food and soda companies...its you stupid PTA mother.

Having a soda and burger for lunch everyday is something that could very well lead to obesity. One of the reasons the parents of overweight kids are also overweight is that the ability to take in calories from food is inherited. I have to work harder than most to stay at a heathy because my grandparents and parents are overweight. That's not to say that the eating habits at home is not to blame, but my mom has also gone on a health fix in the past couple years, replacing our bread with whole wheat bread filled with fiber, getting more cereals that aren't as processed, providing more fruits and vegetables. It hasn't changed her weight a whole lot.

Futhermore, weight can often reflect a mood. A few years ago, when I was depressed, I was about 20 lbs heavier than I am now, when I'm relatively happy. The type of food kids eat isn't everything.

And as a side note, unless it's sugar free Jello, it's not much better than other sugar filled snacks that many parents get.

I think everyone should exercise regularly like your supposed to. People shoulde try limiting their trips to Mc. Donalds too.

It's not just McDonalds, but all fast food places. People tend to single out McD's, but in reality most of them are just as unhealthy.

This is very true! Its also just the incredible incidence of Corn Syrup in foods that are supposed to be good for you! Corn Syrup is not good for you. End of story.

...mmm corn syrup.

but it is your parents fault. whether its genetics or not; my cousin has always been a little overweight...not for a perticular reason she just was, and when she had her daughter she made sure that she got her into activies to get her active, she doesnt hunt her down like a dog and cramp her to where mariana feels bad...but her mother did the right thing in a sutle way making sure her daughter never has to go through...what she went through.

i also have an aunt whose very overweight and my little cousin is becoming overweight and we all dont understand it because my aunt almost encourages my cousin to eat alot and offers her junk food and doesnt care if she works out...as a mother whose been "big" all her life she should try and help her daughter away from that lifestyle. not embrace it.

I think genetics has a lot to do with it of course. But I also think that the amount of bad food that americans eat on a daily basis (and even consider good for you) is filled with stuff that is in fact, bad for you.

yeah, thats exactly my point. all the people that are complaining about all the obesity in america, are parents, who i would guess are feeding their children...lets just say it simply, bad food.

and then its also the parents that force their kids to finish their food whether its vegetables or not, the kid just isnt hungry, so you shouldnt force it, but they/we do, therefore at a young age we learn to eat when we're not hungry.

but you completely validate my point with the genetic thing, cause sometimes its not a persons fault, but i do think its the parents fault when they dont do anything when youre a young child to try and change...soemthing,anything.

totally agree.

i think that a childs weight depends on their parents. Sure they can not control what they eat when they get older, but as children it is the parents responsibility to teach them healthy eating habits as children.

There's a major lack of health education in schools. The generation before ours was not beaten down with health education, and neither is the generation after us. If more schools had mandatory health classes, parents could have the knowledge to change their ways. Some are lazy overeaters, but I'm sure there are many that simply don't know what they can do to reduce their weight.
