Is Facebook Causing The End Of College Reunions?

Five-year reunions (and other year reunions) are seen as an expensive necessity for almost anyone. There aren’t a lot of people who thrive on seeing those who they didn’t want or need to stay in contact with after their years in school with. But, a lot of people still go. Why? Most likely to catch up on who’s doing what, who’s gotten married, etc. But this might all be going away thanks to the social networking system of Facebook.

On Facebook, you are included in networks from your schools with your graduating class. This makes it possible to look up almost anyone you went to school with (if they signed up, obviously). So then why drop hundreds or thousands of dollars in order to travel to your alma mater and see everyone when you can just type in their name and look up their web page?

It is an interesting question whether or not social networking sites will eradicate face-to-face class reunions. On the one hand, you do not have the personal touch online that you would had you gone to your reunion. But on the other hand, it is cheaper and if you really want to have a face-to-face “catch up session,” you could set up a meeting between you and the person you wish to see. But if you would, that would completely devoid the fact that you are saving money by not traveling.

This isn’t the real problem that some people see behind the dwindling amount of people going to reunions due to Facebook. The real problem is that some colleges are panicking because most get about 1/3 of their donations from class reunions. It is a HUGE fundraiser for them. If they can’t say, “You should donate before you come to the fundraiser,” how else will they get more money?

I guess this is not a bad thing at all because colleges already scam everyone out of as much money as possible, but what is going to happen if the college reunion is gone, is that tuition prices will rise and less people will be able to afford college. After all, the college isn’t going to make a budget cut because of insufficient funds. Instead, they will increase funding to maintain an equal, if not greater, budget. But whether or not this situation truly is occurring will be known next summer, 5 years after the time went Facebook hit it big.

I don't see myself attending a college reunion anyways. There are so many people that the chance of me knowing anyone there and actually getting something out of it is low.
