We will never have a perfect presidential candidate.
Our interests as Americans are far too diverse for there ever to be one. From gay marriage to abortion to the War in Iraq to health care, we have too many opinions on too many topics. Although our diversity is a great thing, and a key part of being American, it also splits us as a nation. As a country and as individuals, we never agree completely with a candidate or party platform: there are far too many variables.
Perhaps that's part of the reason party membership is on the decline, and the number of Independents continues to rise. We can't agree with a party on enough issues to join or committ to one party over another. Neither party agrees with us completely, so we refrain from joining either one.
In an odd way, we are doomed to remain dissatisfied with the contenders, and most of us will never completely agree with one candidate because of our diversity and opinionated nature.
WIth the presidential election coming nearer with each passing day, our split becomes even more evident. There are so many contenders seeking candidacy, each with their own viewpoints and ideas, and a base that backs them. Already, we are split between several candidates.
Our nation will always remain split, never completely backing a single candidate, or even close. It's a shame.

You raise several good points, but I have to say that it is not a shame that we will never be behind a single person for president. No one person deserves that much power. The diversity of how we elect leaders is one of the many aspects that makes this country the marvel that it is.
As for Independent parties I think they are wonderful because you do not have to conform to what traditionally Demecrats stand for and for what Republicans stand for. You can take what you agree with from both parties and vote like that.
