Good Friday has been the talk of my town this week, not because of its religious importance, but because the school board took away all religious holidays, including this one. They have, however, decided to let those who call it in as a "Religious Holiday" take off without any penalties, and it will not count against exam exemptions. I think this is great, because it won't penalize the students who want or have to go to church, but doesn't make students who aren't of that religion, in essence, celebrate a holiday that is not their own.
The only problem is, most of the people taking this "Religious Holiday" are planning to celebrate the "Holy trip to the Beach." These people are lying to take off a supposedly sacred day, oh the irony. This upsets me because I, a dedicated Christian, will be in school, sitting through every class period of nothing, because I am not allowed to miss a day of school, even though I would spend my day off doing things that will honor my King. It bothers me that so many people are giving up their integrity to get a day off, and I have to spend the day suffering through classes without any substance AND I don't get to go to church because of it.
While the school board meant well, and is trying to please everyone, they end up punishing the students who are doing what is morally right. Seems a little backwards, doesn't it?

Well, if they so choose to do that, then they will.
I am sure you did things during some other holiday that maybe others wouldn't approve of, but that is sometimes the way things go sadly. All that matters is that you know you're doing the right thing and that you have the respect not to abuse that day.
I don't agree with your school board taking away these holidays in the first place. What are they trying to prove, or what lame-o excuse do they have for taking away important holidays?

What good would it do you if the school board let everyone out on Yom Kippur? Rosh Hashanah? Pesach? Purim (which happens to be Friday, for the record)?

but on these religious holidays that they don't give off to everyone they are not allowed to give any work that needs to be made up, which means the day is a complete waste of time. It seems like they should just cancel it for everyone and add it on so we can get in a day of learning rather than a day of time wasted.

Much of September/October would be a waste if you truly observed many religious practices. This year, there were 4 days in September that required orthodox Jews not attend school. Another two were in the first week of October. In April, when Passover is, it's not so bad, because the no-work days are over the weekend instead of during the week this year.
That's a lot of days off for a secular school.

Wow I go to a private Christian school and they can't really change the religious rules like that. I don't agree withe the school board at all, and to know many people (administration and teachers) have to compromise to this new enforce which inturn affects the students who celebrate Good Friday.
