Earth Hour and late start

Tagged:  •    •    •    •    •

I meant to start this blog about a month ago. Why I didn’t do it? Well…. I am a notorious procrastinator, to tell you the truth. At least when it comes to my private time and wishes. Bad habit, I know. I should put Me first….oh well…at least I did put our Earth first – if only for an hour. Saturday, March 29, 2008, 8.00pm-9.00pm was Her Hour. We have turned off all lights, the AC, the computers and the TV (big deal for Jason, since it is basketball season!), lit some candles – all for Her. I can proudly say, that I have participated in a world wide effort to draw awareness to global warming. About 26 major cities around the globe signed up for this event that started out in Sidney, Australia in 2007. These cities pledged to turn off their lights for an hour, and they actually did, reducing the energy use quite a bit. And me and my husband were part of it.  We might not have made a tremendous impact on global warming, but it certainly feels good to be involved in something that big. We’ll definitely do it next year again!

How about you?
Did you turn out for Earth Hour?

My clock screwed up and so I got a late start (8:30p) but I went until 10 to make up for it. I know they were making a point by having it at 8p, but it would have been nice to do it at 6 or 7 when there was a tiny bit of light left. I wanted to light candles, but my building forbids them so I was in the dark and I couldn't find a flashlight. Oh well, I survived.

Next, I challenge everyone to go an entire 24 hours without using any fuel. No cars, busses, subways, etc. Also try what our campus tried: Spring Cleaning. When you spring clean use the time to recycle everything possible, even if you normally don't. Many major grocery stores have recycle bins. Others can be find with a quick online search. Go for it.

We had friends over for dinner, and the candlelight set the perfect mood for good talk between good friends. It was great!
